As far as the bashing goes, though, that's nothing new. Is it right? no. But it, like all other sorts of prejudice, will probably never be completely eradicated from the world. People fear what they don't understand, which usually leads to anger/hatred of what they don't understand, which usually leads to violence and stupidity. Sad but true.
Also, I don't think you should worry too much. Most people -don't- beat up scene/emo kids just because of how they look. and, as a girl, i'm sure you'd be safer from that sort of random violence. You could always take a self-defense course if that'd make you feel safer, though. That might be a good idea anyway. Self defense is always a handy thing to know.

self defense...i learnt that from my mom, lol. 
and, your very true, i don't think this kind of violence can just be eradicated from the world.
