As for the going along with your mates- well, sometimes you have to. Sometimes it's genuine, but others it's not and you just want to fit it. We've all done it- NO-ONE is 100% against the grain. As long as you know the truth though, who gives a damn?

That's exactly the truth. I have friends that dress a little punky sometimes, and sometimes a little "gothy," and some of my other friends have started dressing like them now that they're closer. It's a little peculiar, and some people say they're posers and stuff, but I guess it really doesn't matter.

Your absolutely right.  I feel that dressing a certain way doesn't say something about your individuality as much as it does about what group you identify with and about what you value.  While dressing goth/punk/skater/preppy/chic/whatever sets you apart from one group it bands you together with another.  It is the same with other lifestyle choices.  I don't know anybody my age who likes the music that I do...while that sets me apart from my peers...it gives me something in common with those who are older then me.  Everything is relative.  People try so hard to be an individual...when it is virtually impossible to do so.  You like a certain dress but you're not going to buy it just because it's the latest style...kind of silly isn't it?

It always makes me laugh how everyone seems to think being goth/punk/skater etc is going against the grain. I went through the mosher stage, and then looked around one day and thought 'you know- everyone looks like me. and this isn't me'. Well, it was me- I did like the clothes- but it wasn't because I didn't have the attitude. There are so many people who think 'ooh- I'm wearing black and I've dyed my hair black- hey I'm a goth!' without even knowing what a real goth is. (I'm not saying anyone here isn't a real goth- I don't know you all, so I couldn't say.)

lol, i don't think i'm gothy, but every stupid personality quiz i take tells me i'm goth! LOL, ahh, they're so silly. I do like the clothes too... Like, the last week of school, i borrowed my friend's "goth gear" and put it on... hehehe, it was so fun. I wore a skirt over my jeans... and pulled my hair back, and put on all these bracelets and chains, and a fake lip ring. ... i got a lot of stares that day... and people constantly talked about me... it was kind of annoying, in that aspect. it's like, "yes, okay... i'm wearing a skirt over my jeans and chains... i'm doing it because i want to. Jeez, shut up!" only a few would actually ask my why i was wearing that... lol, most of them just talked behind my back.  it was still fun, though.

Stop reading my signature. Don't deny it. You're reading it. I can see you. You're giving it the casual little once-over. How rude. Didn't your mother teach you better?

Hmm, I dress the way I want to. I wear whatever I feel like, and don't care in the slightest what people think of it.

I used to get that with my eye make-up. I think that's why I like young kids. They ask straight out 'what you done that for?' without being mocking about it, just genuinly curious.

It's great- if people had said to my face 'That looks daft. What were you thinking?' I'd have had a perfectly calm conversation with them. When they speak behind your back, it gives you superiority. Lol.

How I crave to be like you!!

I hate when people critisize what I wear and how I am which is why when I go to school I stick to jeans and a T, just to prevent any "gossip" about the clothes I'm wearing. I figured if I looked like eveyone else nobody could say anything to me.

I'm a completely differen't person at school then I am at home or on the weekends when I'm out with my friends. On the weekends I wear what I wanna wear...gothic/punk sort of things...especially when I go to shows which by the way I'm starting to hate because of all the EMO people and now that it's the cool thing to do ...but I still go to see amarith and all my friends that I never get to see.....anywho...

When I'm at school I feel as if I can't wear anything even slightly like that without getting questioned or the odd stares. I have worn something that was sligtly gothic but not as heavy as I would usually wear, or  prefer to wear to school and I felt so odd and unfomfortable It doesn't help when your oober self-concious like me...I couldn't wait to get home that day!

But I guess at some point I have to learn not to give a damn what other people think and just me ME!

Next year...I'm gonna be myself...some may see me as a whole diff person...but that's just because they saw me as someone else whom is supposingly socially exceptable in todays society...they saw me how they wanted and I guess I felt pressured to look that way...but not anymore

Hrm ... that's ... nice, I guess. Of course, I sort of think what people think about you should matter to a certain extent, you know. I mean, if you're walking around dressing like a skank or something, then you probably shouldn't do that. Heh.

Very true but I guess that's what some do to grasp the attention of others, sure its not exactly in a positive manner but I guess they would rather it that way

Besides now a days you see alot of celebraties wearing trashy stuff and it can seem appealing to teenagers and since it has lost it's shock value not too many people care anymore

It's kinda unfortunate now a days how easily people can be sucked into these so called trends...What ever happened to individuality???

Do I go against the grain? Hmm, I don't know. I probably think I do but I don't. I listen to music that isn't normally on the radio, (With the exception of Keane... ) But I shop at places like Aeropostale and Torrid. I'm just one giant mix-up.

I think I'm pretty average.

I think I'm pretty average.

Most people are average and there's nothing wrong with it really. nobody is actually one certain thing if you really think of it.

Sure we can categorize ourseves into groups by saying we're either punk rock, gothic, preps or whatever...Some like to be rebellious where as others like to abide by the rules.

If you think about it every way is going against the grain it just depends on what way you look at it, for example some may dress entirely different to stand out like wearing gothic clothing where as their peers are wearing pastel colours thus fore going against the grain.

Or it could be a very well brought up person, abides by the rules, wears appealing/classy clothing but enjoys listening to death metal yet again going against the grain.

Going against the grain is doing something that isn't expected or approved in either your society or family or even religion. Everyone does it. Everyone goes against the grain in some way. Its not uncommon at all.

So everytime someone thinks they're kool for "going against the grain"you have to realize that you are infact doing what everybody else is doing...think about it

I wear what i like, it may not match or be with the latest fashions but as long as i am comfortable with it, some 18year olds are interested in fashion, makeup and getting with the hottest guy in town but im a LOTR loving, Rock music loving girl with most probablly the wierdest mind ever!

it also shows those who are prep/chav/popular how alienated they are to not appreciate everyone else as in that world they are trying to outdo each other with the best designer labels, the most amazing car etc... but looking at what is only face value as per say being accepted if your face fits, right!?
Being yourself is the best in going against the grain as to say you are not not trying to be anybody or everybody!

You see MY WHOLE LIFE practically , except for the last 9 years has been going against the grain... but it's hard and it takes it's toll on your nerves....and that's what happened to me.... I'm not whining or anything.. it's just so much ENERGY is put into trying to beat the system that one gets down right tired... I mean I'm lucky because my husband went against the grain and made it... he's a self made artist. .... me I am teaching which I absolutely love (except for the non teaching junk) and
now I'm part of a system.. but within the system .. I am so out there... that's what one is allowed to do in art...anything goes.. and I'm very fortunate .. that I can do that.. but again the energy is used up constantly.
am I making any sense?

I think I kinda understand what your saying although you have lost me in some places...yet it may not be you, it's probably me...I'm either over-tired or I'm not reading it properly

i think your trying to point out that it's alot more harder to go against the grain now a days because everyone is doing it and it seems that everything has lost its shock value, which means that you have to now strive for your individuality, and lets face it, that can be oh so tiresome

I also take it that you've found a profession that has allowed you to be socially exceptable in society yet still allows you to express your spunky edge or weirdness (weirdness is good!)...and that makes you fortunate to be able to do that.....

Am I close.....?          Am I making sense now?       Oh shizzle stix
