when i say movies about music, i'm not referring to musicals. i'm referring to movies that are about a specific artist/era/genre of music. does anyone like these kinds of films? if so, what are some of your favorites?

Center Stage was a good one. most of the films i've seen that are about music have some dancing in them.

I like Fame and Flashdance a lot.
I also enjoyed the movie that was made about The Doors a lot though I wasn't really familiar with their music and history when I saw it.

excellent choices, Cecilia! Sid & Nancy is one of those movies that never loses its charm. its shown a lot at some of the midnight movie theaters in my area. and Almost Famous is just a wonderful story.
2 of my favorites are: Velvet Goldmine- came out in '98 or '99 and starred the ultra hot Ewan McGregor, Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, and Christian Bale. it tells the story of a journalist (Bale) tracking down a reclusive Glam Rock singer named Brian Slade (Rhys-Meyers) with the help of various people, including one of Slade's former songwriting partners (McGregor). it's a really flashy and cool film. Rhys-Meyers' Brian Slade is reminiscent of David Bowie while McGregor's Curt Wild is a cross between Iggy Pop and Kurt Cobain. and the soundtrack features classic Glam Rock from Lou Reed, Brian Eno, T. Rex and Roxy Music, as well as current songs from Shudder To Think, Placebo, Grant Lee Buffalo, and Pulp. it's such an awesome movie! and yes, Ewan McGregor is naked in it.
24 Hour Party People- also a really cool movie. came out in '02. it's the true story of legendary music svengali Tony Wilson and his label Factory Records, which spawned some of Alternative music's greatest acts including Joy Division, New Order, and Happy Mondays. it stars Brit comedian Steve Coogan as the incomparable Wilson, the very cute Sean Harris as Joy Division's ill-fated singer Ian Curtis (who died in 1980 at age 23 from suicide), and LOTR alum Andy Serkis as eccentric but visionary record producer Martin Hannett (known to his peers and fans as 'the Mad Professor'). there's also cameo appearances from some of the people who were there when all the hype of the Manchester scene happened- Mark Smith of The Fall, Howard DeVoto of The Buzzcocks, Paul Ryder of Happy Mondays, and even a blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo from the real Tony Wilson! i'm a huge fan of Joy Division, so i really dug this film. even if you don't know the story or any of the bands, it's a fabulous film about a fabulous time in modern music.

Heehee, Almost Famous.. that's definitely a crowd pleaser.. So cute.
Andy Serkis is in 24 Hour Party People? Wow, see, now it just makes me want to find it more. Lol. A friend suggested a while ago that I rent it, but I haven't been able to find it anywhere around here. Which is complete rubbish.. it's not old at all, and apparently very good. Grrr. I must start another search this weekend.
Other than that.. hmm. I love musicals, but those aren't what you're looking for.. I like some of the Beatles' movies.. do those count? Lol.

I haven't watched the movies you suggest me, Severance. But I thought of a few more films about music
Shine - with Geoffey Rush. I didn't like it pretty much, anyway. Hillary and Jackie - with Emily Watson. About a mad cello player. Buena Vista Social Club - I didn't see it
a few only partially about music Some like it hot Lisbon Story
about classical music Don Giovanni Farinelli Callas Forever
and the edge of all! (I forgot it last time): The Blues Brother!

that's odd. it's pretty easy to find. if you still can't find it, try looking it up online at amazon.com. it should be there. yeah, it's a lil hard to spot Andy in the film because he's wearing a wig and dorky glasses, but you can tell it's him by his voice.
and Beatles movies totally count!

Like I said, I'll have to go look for it this weekend.
Yay Beatles movies! Haha, I've seen quite a few of those.. Help!, A Hard Day's Night, Magical Mystery Tour.. oh yeah, greatness. Lol, totally silly, but still greatness.
I think A Hard Day's Night might be my favorite.. it has the MMT "Fool on a Hill" quality of the boys just running amok in a field, but also has some fun and witty moments. I love Paul's Grandfather, too! He's so evil a calculating.. but "he's a very clean old man, isn't he?" Teehee. Yay.
