Read all about it here:
http://collider.com/elijah-wood-treasure-island/68828/
It's a TV movie that will be in two-parts, four hours. Wonder if it will come to the USA? If it does, a'hoy Sci-Fi channel! (well... that's my bet!)

It's good to see that he has been offered this role. I also wonder if it will eventually make it's way to the US at some point. It would be a shame if we couldn't see him in this.

i'm actually more excited about this film than the small cameo in that "other" film.
in that "other" film, elijah is in familiar territory. with treasure island, he's going to portray a character like never before, and i love to watch him take on traits he has yet to conquer.
i too hope this will go beyond the borders of the UK.

I don't know this story really, and I have no idea if his character is a main character, or not. And what he's like, his character I mean. Can anyone help me with this?

sure! this is what i wrote about the other day.
Ben Gunn is a marooned crew mate for years on the island. While not a main player in the story, his character's deceitful ways deter others from finding the lost treasure. While Ben has been portrayed as older, I see no reason he couldn't be young. He's a bit deranged and has the look of a wild man from his solitude. He represents a degradation of the human spirit, yet his experience has left him morally superior to the pirates. He is the only character to be reformed, as he shifts sides from the pirates to the good men.
and this is how the author describes gunn in the book:
"His skin, wherever it was exposed, was burnt by the sun; even his lips were black; and his fair eyes looked quite startling in so dark a face. Of all the beggar-men that I had seen or fancied, he was the chief for raggedness. He was clothed with tatters of old ships' canvas and old sea cloth; and this extraordinary patchwork was all held together by a system of the most various and incongruous fastenings, brass buttons, bits of stick, and loops of tarry gaskin. All around his waist he wore an old brass- buckled leather belt which was the one thing solid in his whole accoutrement."

Wow, now I'm really hoping that they will air it here, or that it will be available on DVD or something. Thank you so much for explaining that.

hot off the presses! for those who were hoping treasure island would air other than SKY in the UK, it will show on SYFY as well.
"Treasure Island" to Premiere on Syfy in 2012
Eddie Izzard, Elijah Wood and Donald Sutherland Inked to Star in Special Two-Part Movie Event
NEW YORK, February 2, 2011 - "Treasure Island," the special two-part movie event from RHI Entertainment, will premiere on Syfy, the home of imagination-based entertainment, in early 2012. The production stars Eddie Izzard as Long John Silver. Elijah Wood stars as Ben Gunn. Donald Sutherland will also star as Flint. This new adaptation of the Robert Louis Stevenson classic is currently shooting in Puerto Rico and Ireland.

Wow, two television premieres in '12. :0 Very nice!! Thanks for the new info, Deenan.
If Elijah keeps it up in television, maybe he'll land an original Hallmark movie role.

it's a little confusing, but i think it will air on sky late in 2011 then make its rounds early the following year. some reports say it will originally air in 2011, some say 2012. i'm thinking it will be in 2011 since it's begun to film.
btw, hallmark is good, but i think a syfy production is better.

Treasure Island is one of my favorite stories, and I've seen most of the movie adaptations. My favorite thing about Ben Gunn is his intense craving for cheese. He's been stuck on the island for years, and the first thing he asks when he sees another human soul is, do you have any cheese? (I would miss cheese, too.)

yeah, what's with ben and cheese? i like it too, but after being stuck on an island for three years, i'd rather have it wrapped around a hamburger.
anyway, you guys... there's a little snippet of treasure island on you tube now and we have our first glimpse of ben! he's seen very quickly but i don't think you'll miss him.
SKY 1 PROMO
not what i was expecting at all, but i didn't really know what to expect. elijah looks amazing and from what i could tell, the movie has a fresh look to it as well.
