IMO though, as good as Elijah is in EII, the picture belongs to Eugene Hutz (singer of Gogol Bordello) in his FIRST ever film role!! A total classic!!!

I will respectfully disagree; I gave the film to Elijah. It takes a lot of skill to underplay a role and allow the other characters to be more colorful. I found myself fascinated by Elijah's portrayal of Jon. He was so self-contained and physically still and when the camera zeroed in on his face, amazing; I don't understand how he did it! This was another movie I wasn't looking forward to seeing and was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Eugene was excellent too btw and seemed so totally comfortable it's hard to believe this was his first acting role.

Romeny... I respect your right to disagree btw
But about your question of how Elijah was able to underplay the role of Jonathan Foer, I do believe he studied the depiction of Peter Sellers' character in the 1979 film 'Being There'.
And if you look up this film on Wikipedia, you'll see the cover of the dvd bears certain similarities to images in EII.

I agree there are similarities between the films although Seller's character is a simple man who's mistaken for a genius whereas I think Jonathans quirkiness serves to mask his intelligence.

Annie, when I posted before, I didn't make myself clear, sorry... It isn't my own interpretation of the way EJW played Jonathan, I just recall reading an interview some time ago where he said director Liev Schreiber suggested he watch the fim 'Being There' to get an idea of how to physically underplay a character. I hope I've got that right.

I think I remeber reading that interview too. I'll have to try and get hold of a copy of Being There as it's years since I've seen that film.
