You're welcome Storyteller.
Quote from: Joanie on March 12, 2006, 11:42:15 pm Well, I've been meaning to post on this thread for quite a while, but kept forgetting.
I saw this movie on Starz a while back and thought it was pretty good. However, I was laughing through most of it. Was it meant to be funny? I thought it was very tongue-in-cheek......and was laughing through most of it.
I thought the violence was pretty nasty, but other than that, I just couldn't get past the laughter. Sorry.........just my interpretation.
Please don't throw stones........I'm sensitive.

That's okay! I thought it was tongue-in-cheeck a lot of times too. They made a lot of jokes and things in a kind of dark humor that made people laugh, like the part that one of the guys got shot throught the back by an arrow from Miho, and he didn't feel any pain, he was just like, "Hey guys, look! I got an arrow through me! Hey, what's with that?"
I've heard that people were laughing when they saw Kevin against the tree. I was pretty shocked though.

that depends on which parts you laughed at. i laughed at parts, but most of the time i was just in awe of the visual look of the film. but it is a comic book; graphic, but comic nonetheless.
i have the dvd and there is a commentary track of sorts that have an audience reaction to the film. it's like sitting in the theater with a crowd, and there was laughing there as well. it's like blue star said. it's dark humor.

The movie was written just as Frank Miller did his comics. The speech, everything. I think the movie was meant to have some of those laughable parts and it did lighten the mood during a lot of dark scenes. I'll laugh at all the wrong times anyway.

Oh geez... firstly let me say that the search function for this board is screwed, cos I search for 'Sin City' twice (once in lower case and once proper) and found nothing...
But that aside, I saw Sin City about 2 months ago, and I thought it was very well done. Stomach churning, most definitely. But cinematically, it was fantastic.
Elijah's character in it was particularly blood-curdling... maybe that's because I don't associate Elijah's sweet face and persona with cannibalism, it was such a shock to see what his character was.
My only criticism is that the movie didn't allow for enough character development, particularly between Nancy and that guy... I think that considering that their story more or less opened the film and was a major showpiece later on, it would have been better if the story had followed them a bit more early on, maintained their importance.
That said, it is still one of the most moving and visually original pieces of film that I have seen recently. It really is remarkable, and if you haven't seen it yet then what are you waiting for?!

My husband loves Sin City. It's about his favoite movie, I'm not a gory movie person. He forced me to watch this during the holidays and I finally got to see "Kevin". He was nice and scary. Bill was cheering and shouting like it was a sports event. I was covering my eyes. Then I grabbed the remote just as they said, "Still smiling", and switched to...I kid you not..a Christmas Story..the scene with the Chinese Christmas dinner duck, "It's smiling at me".
Oh No! I had nightmares.
But as far as Elijah is concerned I am very impressed with his range. The character "Kevin" is as far removed from the character "Frodo" as possible, yet he did an unbelievably fantstic job at both.
I think Sin City was a brilliant move on his behalf too, as far as avoiding "type casting" and so forth. And I got a kick out of my husband saying, "Wow I love him in this movie."

I second the above post.
I admit that I *never* would have watched Sin City had Elijah not been in it. However I was very impresses with his 'silent film' acting turn in this one! Amazing!
Also, the film's look in general was unique and very interesting from an artistic standpoint - so Bravo all round!
