Oh my goodness, am I the only who thinks this movie is great?
Don't shoo me off for saying so! LOL I liked it alot, I actually wrote a small review of it for a mailing list I was on. I can't say I watched this show because of Elijah. It was also because of Robert Downey Jr, whom I think is just brilliant, and the other reason being was the director James Toback. He did a movie called "Two Girls and Guy" ( with Robert Downey) which I thought was fantastic. I soon realised that Toback was famous for making indie movie, which in this case, was.
Anyway, if you've all not died of boredom as yet, I'll try to convince you with what I wrote before and posted somewhere on the board. Hehe, maybe this would put it in a better light for some of you. --------------------------------------------------------------
Black and White for me is a striking study of identity as it is an interesting exploration of cross-cultural relationships.
While there are some thoughtful exchanges on racial and cultural differences, the interaction between black-white starts off as promising in the beginning but then proves uneasy and difficult for both sides. They find that they don't quite know how to deal with the undercurrent of crime and violence that swirl around them.
There a few things that left me a little unconvinced, it was the idea that pretty and intelligent white girls would want to throw themselves at self-involved African-Americans.And it's hard to believe that a white teenager would kill someone just to gain acceptance from the brotherhood.Somehow,it just didn't go well for me on that part of the movie.
But,the best scene of work for me,was the provocative scene where Tyson smacks Terry(the closet gay)was really fantastic.I found the edgy camera work and the improvising to be a great plus.I don't like Tyson, but I thought his performance as an articulate conversationalist, was great.Really floored me there.
But,it was Downey as usual, that really stood out for me.I started watching the movie, without realizing his character was supposed to be gay. This was mainly because at the start of the film,I didn't really notice him(although I was looking out for him)I think it was because he wasn't in the scenes long enough.
And maybe that was the whole point to allow the audience to find out about his character. But,that's how I look at it anyway.I felt,in beginning,I was still getting used to the fast paced, edgy camera work, punctuated by the loud hip-hop rap music.
The rest of the cast turned in a great performance, I don't think I've seen Ben Stiller star in a non-comedic role before. It was very refreshing to see these actors do material they don't normally do.

Just a question, people of the Forum: I know Elijah played Bijou Phillips' boyfriend in the movie Black and White, but no-one ever mentions it and I've never seen it.
Does anyone have this movie? How big is Elijah's role? Is it any good/worth renting/buying?
Just curious!

**i merged this topic with the existing one. just do a search to see if a topic has already been started.
i guess you can tell from the earlier responses, this isn't one of the better films elijah has been in, and i have to agree. i rented it once and thought it was bad, then i gave it a second chance and rented it again. it was still bad.

Thanks for that info Deenan , I probably won't bother with this film then.
And thanks also for merging my query with the pre-existing thread. I couldn't find it, and for some reason, my searches are rarely sucessful!(?)

This is what I refer to as the 'marmite' film. UK fans will be familiar with the advertisement stating ' you either love it or hate it.' Firstly, it's not an easy film to watch, secondly it definitely needs more than one viewing and then you have to to adjust to the loud rap music which accompanies the soundtrack. That having been said, I've always found Shakespeare plays hard going but I've also found that if you persevere and stick with them they can be most rewarding and entertaining. So if you enjoy slickly produced, easy to follow action movies this may not be the film for you but if you're looking for something a little more challenging with comlex characters and hidden agendas you might wish to give this film a second chance.

Annie I'm not one for slick Hollywood fare so perhaps I SHOULD try to find it.
After all my fave Elijah film after LOTR is Everything is Illuminated, and I seem to be one of the only people on here who really loves Chain of Fools LOL!

that's a very good way of putting it annie. btw, i love most shakespearean plays
i'm very open minded, and i always give films a chance which is why i sat through a second viewing of this film, but sadly it never gelled for me.
