Yeah, Jim Carrey was on some talk show recently, and he was talking a little about this movie. He says it's good; that he really liked working on it. He said it was a real low-budget film, but still turned out great. So I'm excited to see it!

I don't know about the rest of you, but I am extremely looking foreward to this movie! I am a huge fan of Charlie Kauffman's writing. Well, IMDb.com had said a while ago that it would be released here in the US on Nov. 14, 2003. But they have taken that down. Apparently the film needs more editing work done. I have heard that they want it to qualify for some Oscars. (Lij=maybe?) So the film has been pushed back to early 2004. Possibly January, since the Oscars are airing Feb. 20-something. I've also found a review from someone who saw it at a pre-release screening. As you can see by what he says, it really does need some editing work!

interesting review. He does go on about Momento and Pulp Fiction for a while, but I still found it informing.
I saw the movie a couple of nights ago in a pre-release screening. I think the music was still a temp track and some of the looping wasn't finished, but it's definitely a Kaufman-style movie. I haven't read the script, and probably won't ever have time to, so I don't know how closely the film matches the screenplay.
Some of the effects were actually very good, as Carrey is struggling in his own dreams, and conscious of the fact that his memory is slowly being erased. His attempts at fighting the erasal were interesting, although I hope they cut out some of the uneventful dream material, because it went on for too long.
Forgetting for a moment that this is a very unlikely couple (certainly giving it more of a fantasy aspect then a realistic one), the biggest problem with the film is it's attempt to be non-sequential. I'm not a big fan of the non-sequential trend, where films start somewhere in the middle of the story, then jump back in time, move slowly back up to the scene from the opening, then continue on to the end. I can't even count how many films do that now. Even Spielberg has started doing it (with Catch Me If You Can). I don't like to jump around in the story. I like the traditional "first this happened, then this happened" approach.
The only two non-sequential films I ever saw that I thought worked very well were Pulp Fiction and Memento. With Pulp Fiction we didn't know it wasn't linear until well into the movie, because the non-sequential transitions were seamless. And there was a message being told that was entirely in sequence, even if the scenes were not in a temporal order. Memento, which also deals with memory issues, was one of the most brilliantly edited movies made. The editing, in fact, was a character in the story itself. The major thread was actually sequential -- just sequential in reverse. This was intercepted by a second thread that served as the narrative, a scene that takes place somewhere in the middle of the story and helped us start to understand the reversed plot being told around it. The effect was to help the audience empathize with someone who has a failing memory. With the scenes shown to us backward, we also have no "memory" of what happened "before." Just like the protag.
In the cut of Eternal Sunshine that I saw, the smash from the present to the past was so jarring that I was confused for the next thirty minutes of the movie. Jim is sitting in the car, Kate has just told him she's going to get her toothbrush and slams the door. While Jim is waiting, Elijah walks up and raps on the window. CUT. Now Jim is walking down the street, and a white van is following him. We here Elijah's voice in the van, giggling. Jim goes into the house and pops some pills. Kate isn't around. So at this point, I have no idea what's going on. I even considered that the projectionist spliced the reels together in the wrong order (which I've seen happen). While I'm trying to figure this out, we then enter Jim's dream-state, and I don't recall realizing that Jim was dreaming at first, which gets me even more confused. Eventually this clears up as I start to understand that some technicians are in his apartment -- per his arrangement -- to erase his memory while he's sleeping. But I still couldn't figure out that jarring smash cut where Kate's character left us to get her toothbrush... The next time we see her it's in dreams, and the dreams are just surreal enough to give identify themselves.
And the dreams (intercut with the technicians in reality) took quite a chunk of screen time. (It reminded me of those dreams you have when you try to wake up and you can't.) In effect I started getting a little bored. But if you're really patient, Eternal Sunshine finally starts making sense, and by the end of the movie you got it. And it ends with a really good point about human nature.
So the movie saves itself, at least for me. But in my notes I made sure to point out my confusion. With some better editing it can be a much less frustrating film to watch.

You might not have seen Reservoir Dogs by Quentin Tarantino which is also filmed in non-sequential form. It was a tad confusing at the start, but it didn't stay confusing for long.

Quentian Tarentino movies are always a little strange. But then again, so are Charlie Kaufmen movies. But I just love them.
