Return of the King Music Score
« on: December 31, 2004, 01:29:38 pm »

I keep wanting to talk about Howard Shore's masterpieces and acheivements in the score, because it invented the soul of the films! And the most dramatic and emotional songs are in ROTK. I love the song that Liv Tyler sings in the Houses of Healing extended scene, beautiful music. And the directing for the part was done so effectively. Also one of my favorite parts is lighting the beacons. The music was amazing.
But I think I really like most of the music that was newly put into the extended scenes. Frodo and Sam after they've taken off their orc clothes, for example, and there's one solo instrument playing in the backround when Sam points to one star in the sky. That whole part right there was brilliant and dark and emotional.
So what music parts do you like best in Return of the King?

i'm most moved by the "into the west" song. it's played several times and i think someone said they play it when death is upon someone. of all the main songs for LOTR, "into the west" is my favorite.

the lighting of the beacons gives me goosebumps everytime i see it. also in TTT when gandalf and eomer ride down the hill to battle the orcs gives me the same goosebumps. howard shore is amazing.

In the beacon scene, the music is what makes it work. It's an amazing bit of writing on Howard's part, and it really does make the scene nothing short of breathtaking.

I also agree - the Houses of Healing bit (with Liv's song) is gorgeous. I cried the first time I watched that part, even though I knew perfectly well what would happen next. It was just so beautiful.

The Grey Havens music is also great, and emotional. When Frodo and Bilbo are riding the wagon to the Havens, the "hobbit theme" is played, but it's all mellow and slow and sad on a flute. It's so pretty.

I also love the Gondorian theme, whenever that's played. Yay, it's great.

There is one theme in the score that I absolutely love the most. I can't really name it other than when the elven smiths are forging the sword of Elendil, and it's used softly and emotionally when Pippin looks at the white tree of Gondor. And then the best way Howard used this theme was a little part of music in the first ROTK EE movie disc, when he changed the whole note of the theme and it is just absolutely.... I don't know, how iconic Return of the King could have been. You have to listen to the thing. Just wow.

Ah! i love all of the Lord of the Rings music. It is so beautiful, powerful, detailed, and perfect for every scene. Howard Shore is a genius.
Do any of your friends tease you for liking this music? Some of my friends don't get it because it's classical, and they think i'm obsessed for liking everything lord of the rings!

I agree, I love the music.
Howard Shore did an excellent job fitting the music into the moves so well. It made the them ten times better and defently more emotional. I can't even image what LOTR would be like without music

Speaking of not being able to imagine what it would be like w/out music, I remember watching this WB special on Lord of the Rings when The Two Towers came out, and after all the interviews and documentary stuff they showed the Warg clip with Legolas shooting arrows at them over the hill, only the music wasn't there. It was just sound. I'm like," What is wrong with this???". It doesn't even feel like a movie without the music glueing it together, I mean the dramatic emotion of it is captured completely in the music and the drama is most of what the movie's kind of about. It extends to most movies I think.

Gee, deenan, was just thinking of this as I read through all the previous comments.

I have all three CDs and can't begin to count the number of times I've played them.  If it were possible to wear out a CD, mine would be long gone.  They are the most fantastic film scores I've ever heard.  I still get goosebumps from the lighting of the beacons section.

A few months ago I bought the three books of piano arrangements of the scores.  Gorgeous arrangements, but a bit difficult.

I agree with all of you; Howard gave the story its own soul through the music. It is difficult to choose among those incredible masterpieces, but I´ll point out some of them...

- The music and chorus in Moria as they run away from the Balrog
- The Fellowship theme
- Lothlorien
- Rohan music
- Chorus for ´Isengard unleashed´
- Gollum´s song
- The pieces sang by Billy and Liv
- The music and chorus after Aragorn says ´for Frodo´
- Into the West
- ...

howard's talents have paid off once again!

Toronto-born Howard Shore won another two Grammys for Lord of the Rings. The first was for best score soundtrack album for Return of the King - his third consecutive year picking up that trophy.

His other was for co-writing Annie Lennox's Into the West which was up for best song written for a film.

I realized early on in watching the Grammys that the emphasis was on pop, rock, etc. and only saw about Howard's wins as a crawler across the bottom.  I gave up about half-way through, but am taping it so I can go back and see if I missed anything important. No sign of Elijah that I saw.  Anyone else spot him?

Way to go, Howard.  *cheering madly* I think he's awesome.  Wonder if he'll ever write another film score to equal LOTR.

I have to write about the music to get my mind off of what happened today.... if anyone was watching CNN news... yes the mall in Kingston N. Y. was where I was and yes .. I was eye to eye with the gunman... I was fortunate though... for whatever reason ..he didn't shoot me or my daughter... he was headed for the inside of the mall...but he did manage to shoot off some bullets and we had to duck down and try to avoid him...OMG he went after my husband though... TG.. all of us got out alive...

The music will help me to calm down... I love the music when Sam and Frodo are on MT. Doom and Sam picks up Frodo after saying"but I can carry you .." (what can you see on the horizon....)
The music of the Grey Havens, The Hobbit's theme... Enya's wonderful song at the end of LOTR, there is so much to pick from ... Howard is a genius...
