What a mess, indeed! Except that, in the film world, lawsuits such as this are just business as usual, and don't mean folks can't work together again. So I don't believe the lawsuit would keep Peter from working with New Line.
On the issue of the rights, it is New Line who owns filming rights, and now Sony (since they bought MGM/United Artists) who owns the distribution rights. I do wish both studios would let go of their greed a bit and give the world this film! Very frustrating, it is. 
By the way, thanks, everyone who has signed the petition. Peter is behind us 100%, and I try to keep the folks in NZ at Weta and Wingnut informed of how many signatures we have. And I am just about to send the link to the studios involved as well, to remind them we are out here and are serious about this film!
Rest assured, Peter still wants to make The Hobbit. Keep spreading the word, and encouraging your friends to sign. Right now we have just over 31,000 signatures, but there is no reason to stop now!

That's odd...  I just did a test run with my own signature, took it as far as the preview and everything worked. I'll get some of my friends to test it as well, and if they also have trouble, I'll contact the petitiononline folks to get that fixed.
Hang in there, folks, and keep trying.
Edit: Some friends tried signing the petition today and had no trouble. Not sure why anyone here is having trouble, but please, if you can't sign via the link I provided, go to the Let the Hobbit Happen page and access the petition via the link there. Perhaps you can sign that way.

Ohmygosh! I have heard about all this. My second cousin's friend work in the film industry and she told us about this long before it came out into the world. I am so glad that so many people know about it at this time! I really want to make this thing happen. And for everyone else who agrees, stand up and halla!

LOL, the petition has been out there in the world for a long time, but I am very glad to know that folk in the industry do know about it. I've sent all the studios involved copies of the signatures way back when it was at around 11,000. The petition has gotten too big (well over 1000 pages) for me to easily print off and give them hard copies any longer, but they will be getting CDs with the sigs before too long. I also keep Peter informed of how we are doing, and his messages of encouragement really help keep my spirits up about one day seeing this story on film. So everybody, keep signing, and let's make that dream come true for all Hobbit fans!

What do you mean, Marit? Of course I am very glad you signed earlier, but the petition is still fully functional. Just now I checked and the signature count stands at 33,879.
