Well from the looks of it i am the only smoker on the board so let me speak on his behalf considering i know how difficult it is to quit!!! No one starts smoking just for the hell of it, it is a personal choice we as smokers make whether it is peer pressure or stress (nicotine IS A STRESS RELIEVER, it was used and prescribed as such in the old days) and quitting because of the addictive nature (the reason it was banned from medical use) is VERY difficult. I agree it is gross to non smokers and in certain places it should be banned however treating SMOKERS as second class citizens is completely uncalled for, I am not saying that is what any of you are doing but pointing out statistics is futile WE KNOW THE FACTS, and it does get a little tedious having people pointing out to us on a constant basis that we should quit or take it somewhere else. The government sees fit to make it illegal in public but it is funny that their "environmentally health conscience minds" conveniently draw the line at selling them and taxing the crap out of them to make a butt load of money.. So please be concerned but to consistently voice these opinions is offensive to those of us who are smokers (and i know there are others here who may not wish to speak up) I myself will quit when it is physically possible but for those of you who do not or who have never smoke(d) it is impossible for you to say QUIT because YOU DO NOT KNOW. Sorry for the rant i just thought that it needed to be looked at from both sides of the coin:)

My mum smoked since she was about 11-13 years old up until last year when she was told she might have mouth cancer, she stopped cold turkey and lasted 27 days cold turkey and then when she felt it was right she got nicotine patches and hasn't had one cigarette since. That's not important here but I just thought I'd tell you, I'm proud of her. She says she couldn't have done it without me.

If i understand you right then THANK YOU then I agree with you. I have to say though, I don't believe people who say "I had to because everyone else did. It was peer pressure" I find that to be a lousy excuse. If everyone started cutting out bits of their own anatomy would you do it? (Weird example but the whole jumping off a cliff thing is far overrated, some people would do it!)

thank you maryd, although i was not looking for apologies just trying to shed some light and victoria (lol that is my mums name) i myself did not start smoking because of peer pressure i tried it a couple of times when i was younger but nothing serious it was not until the stress of my father passing when i was 14 did i actually start smoking so no i would not cut out my anatomy. Kudos to your Mum for quitting though, my bro in law was able to do the same thing only without patches. it is different for every smoker. but for some people who do not have enough self worth or will power they do give into peer pressure, that is how alot of young people try drugs or drinking!!

Sorry to hear about your dad, starladear - I understand it must have been terrible. My own mum smokes way too much but my dad successfully quit without patches too! Proud of him!

If I could say one thing to Elijah, it would be this:
Elijah, I think I speak for most of your fans when I say this. Please, Elijah, try to stop smoking. Find something else to do when you feel that urge: exercise, chew gum, meditate, anything. I know you don't even like it; you proved that in the FotR commentary when you begged the listeners not to smoke.
You're an awesome actor and a very beautiful person, and I love you. I couldn't bear the thought of you dying young.

Well said.. But as Starladear says..it's not that easy. We all know that Elijah is a compulsive, somewhat obsessive guy..look at the way he bites his nails ( even his toenails..lol) and how addicted he is to collecting music... maybe he gets more stressed than any of us realise, and needs cigarettes to unwind. He always comes across as an easy-going sort of guy, never gets angry ( by his own admission) is always gentle, pleasant, polite and thoughtful to everyone he meets, but who knows what his life is really like. He knows the risks, just like everyone else, and when he's ready, he'll quit. If not before i honestly think he'll do it when he has children of his own.

He started around the time he was filming the Faculty. It was either during the production, or just after at the Premier. He was 16 or 17..so that's nearly ten years. Josh Hartnett who was also in the Faculty smoked clove cigarettes at the time and Elijah was intrigued by them.. I think Josh has since given up.

thats so bad.He was so young.I am 17 years old too now ! I hope,he is going to quit smoking in shortest time.We don't wanna lose him

I think Elijah's not very smart....
He lets himself being caught with cigs... What's he thinking? There are so many young children that look up to him... doesn't he think of the effects it will have on them? They might start to smoke too?! He makes it look so cool... poor thing...

I don't like to see pics of Elijah smoking as I do not think it is attractive and that it is a filthy habit
