I met Elijah at the Gogol gig in Nottingham, UK!

Hi
I went to the Gogol Bordello gig at Rock City in Nottingham (UK) last night (3rd July), and was lucky enough to meet Elijah!! I hope you don’t mind me posting this detailed account here - I haven’t got a web site or Live Journal or MySpace or anything, and I just want to share the experience with like-minded people!
I bought the ticket months ago, and it wasn’t until last month I realised that Elijah would be in the UK for Comic Con on 1st & 2nd – so there was a good chance he might make it up to Nottingham to be with Pam.
Anyway, just in case a miracle happened and I saw him, I went equipped with a piece of card for him to sign, plus a CD I wanted to give him (by a band called Breed 77 – they’re from Gibraltar and do a unique fusion of metal/hard rock with Flamenco influences).
By the time the first support band were well into their set, I’d given up on the idea of seeing Elijah – maybe he wasn’t there, maybe he was backstage, and anyway, what was the chance of spotting him in the rapidly increasing crowd? But then (proving that miracles do indeed happen ), I happened to look down from my vantage point half–way up the stairs to the balcony (I’m only 5 feet tall, so I always stand there to get a decent view of the stage) and there, sitting on the end of a raised platform below the stairs, was a familiar couple....... I think the word here is ‘SQUEEE!!’? Elijah and Pam were kissing and canoodling, clearly besotted with each other. Elijah was very excited and animated.
I went down the stairs in case they got up and headed for the backstage doors just a few yards away and waited, trying not to look at them cause it seemed rude to, but not wanting to loose track of where they were! Anyway, a couple of minutes later they got up. I think Elijah said something like ‘Let’s get going’ – clearly it was time for Pam to get ready for the gig. I smiled at Pam as she went past towards the doors, then Elijah went past.....so I took my courage in my hands and tapped him gently on the shoulder.....
Me: “I’m sorry to bother you…um…” {incoherent mumbling whilst I try to keep body, mind & soul together!!} “..er.. I really love your work”. Elijah: “Thank you!” Me: {handing him the CD}: “Have you heard of the band Breed 77?” Elijah: “What’s that?” {as in, ‘what did you say?’ – we’re trying to communicate over the sound of a band playing} Me: “Breed 77. It’s ‘Flamenco Metal’.” Elijah: “Oh, cool!” {said in a slightly bemused way, bless him – after all, it’s not every day you hear the phrase ‘flamenco metal’! } Me: “You might not like it……” Elijah: “No, no..” {as in, “but I might like it”} “Thank you!”. Me: “Could I have your autograph, please?” {at least, I do hope I said ‘please’ – I can’t remember!} Elijah: “Sure! What’s your name?” Me: “Diane. I’m really looking forward to the show tonight….” Elijah: “It’s gonna be great – you’ll love it!”. Elijah hands me the autograph, I say a heartfelt thank you, he flashes a beautiful smile, and then disappears backstage through the doors. I spend the next 24 hours with an inane grin on my face, much to my long-suffering husband’s amusement!
Elijah was so gracious and friendly. I only took up a minute of his time, but even so, it was his time and every minute with Pam must be precious to him, so I’m so grateful to him for speaking to me – and signing an autograph with what must be a very sore hand after Comic Con! I hope he enjoys the CD – but even if he doesn’t, he seems to be on a mission to collect every CD ever produced , so at least I helped him out a little there....
My brain registered the fact that he looked absolutely drop-dead gorgeous, and yet the weirdest thing is that I can’t really recall anything about him clearly, except his eyes. Not the colour, because it was too dark for that, but they are so big and luminous with beautiful long lashes.....Unfortunately,I haven’t got a photo to share with you, because my phone is a little ancient (bit like me!) and doesn’t take pictures.....and besides, I don’t think it would have been appropriate to ask for a photo anyway.
And the show? Elijah was right – it was great and I did love it! In fact, Gogol are one of the best bands I’ve ever seen (and I’ve seen a fair few)! You can’t help but clap and sway and bounce and headbang and well, just move to each and every song – fantastic! Pam and Elizabeth don’t come on for every song, but I must say I liked the songs in which they took part the best – they add a whole extra dimension with their percussion, dancing and singing.
Well, I’m off to buy some Gogol Bordello CDs.... oh, and a Breed 77 CD to replace the gap in my collection!

May I ask why no camera? They're sold at every corner shop. (Sorry, but I don't trust stories by people who provide no proof, or accompanying accounts)

Thanks for sharing that experience with us! And, personally, I'm glad you wouldn't have pressed him for a photo, even if you'd had a camera. It doesn't really seem the right sort of venue for that, though I know he'd graciously oblige.

Perhaps I should have explained, sources that are unconnected in any way.
