There was a Sweet Valley version of it? Hahahaha, omg, that's hilarious. I used to read those books religiously when I was younger.

Me too! I read them ALL!
I also was a huge fan of the More Scary Stories books. My teacher in 5th grade used to close all the windows and light candles on Friday afternoons and read them to us!!
The High Beams one was the one that scared met he most when I was a kid.

Quote from: Chanterella on July 09, 2003, 09:20:23 am Stephen King's books are horrible. My mother said she had nightmares after reading "Cat cemetery". It was really frightening. I only opened the book once, just out of curiosity, and the cat that was dead had came back to life. Being read like this, it sounds as if the book was funny instead of scary. But I garantee, it is scary. Veerrry scary.

I went through a phase where I was obsessed with Edgar Allen Poe. And I definitely remember those Scary Stories books -- the pictures used to scare me more than anything! We would read them at sleepovers and stuff. But then for a couple years I went to this devout Christian school and all the good stuff was banned. Ugh! It was so frustrating!

| i know what you mean. Devout Christian schools are not fun. at least once a day i have to listen to someone telling me that Harry Potter is evil, and that if i read it i'm going straight to the devil!

Oh, well the one I went to was like in 5th or 6th grade -- I only lasted a couple years there. That was before HP came out, thank God! I can only imagine what they would've said about it.... Hahah, probably something along the lines of what you just described.

I know that statement came off a little pissy. It's just that I am a huge Stephen King fan and am very tired of everyone bashing him for his writing. I know not everyone can stand long long novels, but the length of these novels helps create a more three dimensional story and characters.
Sorry gals!

I'm surprised no one here has mentioned Clive Barker books....those are by far the creepiest and best written books I've ever found. My favorite is the Books of Blood, which originally were published in three different volumes but you can now buy them as one big book. Very weird, original, creepy, scary and just plain unnerving stuff. I <3 Clive Barker!!!

The Shining by Stephen King. The part with room 217....oh man. Too scary. If you don't mind, I'm going to quote it.... "There was a sudden rattling, metallic sound behind him. It came just as hid hand closed around the doorknob, and an observer might have thought the brushed steel of the knob carried an electric charge. He jerked convulsively, eyes widening, other facial features drawing in, grimacing. Then he had control of himself, a little anyway, and he let go of the doorknob and turned carefully around. His joints creaked. He began to walk back to the bathroom door, step by leaden step. The shower curtain, which he had pushed back to look into the tub, was now drawn. The metallic rattle, which had sounded to him like a stir of bones in a crypt, had been the curtain rings on the overhead bar. Jack stared at the curtain. His face felt as if it had been heavily waxed, all dead skin on the outside, live, hot rivulets of fear on the inside. The way he had felt on the playground." The shower curtain........it's too freaky.
