Collecting Books

Are there other people here who collect books? My boyfriend and I do. We have a big Tolkien collection (some of our books are rather valuable) and I'm now trying to get a hold of first editions - first printings of the first three Harry Potter books (I already have the others). And I want a collection of both adult and children versions.
Anyone else?

I also collect Tolkien books, but I think I have told you that. I also collect old books. They realy fascinate me, especially hard to find books that have stories I love. My husband had a first edition of Dracula that he gave to my daughter. She and her husband have it stored in a fireproof box.
I have several editions of LOTR but the one I want to get my hands on is the original version of The Hobbit, the one before Tolkien start LOTR and made changes to the story of how Bilbo acquired the Ring. I doubt I would ever run into one here, though. That edition never made it across the pond, that I know of.

I'm not really a book collector, but I do like to have sets of things.
I have to own the whole of the series if I read one out of it, and they all have to be of the same cover design.
I have all of Terry Pratchett's Discworld series (mostly second hand - love second hand books) and I've only actually read about 6 or 7 of them, lol. (There are 36 Discworld books)
I have all the Harry Potter books, as well as a few of Philip Pullmans series', and my Dad has just completed the collection of Jasper Fforde books.
Other than that, I'm not really a collector. I can't be doing with all this first edition thing. I don't buy them to have them and for them to look pretty on my shelves, I buy them to read them.
I can't afford more than that lol.

Everything I have has been read, except for the very expensive LOTR hardbacks with the illos by Alan Lee. I'm kind of afraid to read that and maybe damage them.
The Dracula was bought by my hubby when he was in college at the used section of the school bookstore to read for an english class. It was YEARS later when we realized it was a first edition.

I just read last week that the first HP book had an initial printing (UK) of 500. A copy is now worth $40,000 (29,692.42 EUR) Yikes!

Have you ever checked eBay? I haven't looked for Tolkien books there for a long time, but in the past they've had some really rare editions.

Wow, you have a first edition of "Dracula"! Guess that must be worth a lot of money right now.
You mean the really early printings of "The Hobbit" right? I'm afraid the earliest copy we have is one from 1972. You could try www.ebay.co.uk, they often have very early copies but they sell for quite a lot of money.

I have that one too. Do you also have "The Hobbit" illustrated by Alan Lee? I'd never think of reading those, I only take them out every once in awhile to look at the drawings.
I also have a very beautiful copy of "The Hobbit" with drawings from Tolkien and a first edition, first print of "The Silmarillion". I never read those either.

It may be worth that much but it sells for a lot less. There is currently on for sale on ebay.co.uk that has a "buy it now" for 495,95GBP (that's less then 1000USD).

Yes, I meant the earliest editions of "The Hobbit". It would probably have to be a first or second printing to be before the changes. I would LOVE to read those. I'll keep an eye on eBay but I doubt I could afford what it would cost right now while we are doing so much redecorating.
I've never seen the Alan Lee Hobbit illos, well, not in the book. I'll have to watch for that one.
I also collect books ABOUT Tolkien's works, critiques, etc. Although I've never found an "enclyclopedia" yet that didn't have BLATANT errors in it.

Wow, you all do very well!
I'm not a collector. I use the library mostly. I read loads but I've never felt the urge to have a collectors edition of a book if I've already read it.

It's really a beautiful book! I'm sure you'll find it on ebay as well, probably even a lot cheaper. I paid only 25€ for my copy on ebay.
Early editions of "The Hobbit" do cost a lot of money. Occasionally, there's a first edition, first print for sale on ebay but the prices are way too high for my budget.
Mary, I go to the library as well but I just love to have my own books.

No, I haven't seen that one, Cristiel! I'll have to go eBay shopping I can see right now. LOL
Like you, I like to have my own books. I even bought a cheap copy of LOTR so I could have one to make notes in. LOL I've conducted several online readthroughs and needed to make notes in the book and underline.
FIrst editions are too high for my budget, too LOL The Dracula thing was a complete fluke! My husband says he thinks he paid a dollar for it! LOL

I hope you can find it, it'll go nicely with your Alan Lee Lotr illos book 
I have one, what I call, reading copy of most of Tolkien's book, mostly cheap paperback editions. I never make notes in my books though, I have a special notebook for that.
You're lucky to have a first edition of "Dracula", it's probably worth a lot right now.

Really? I wonder who decided one of the 500 first editions is worth $45,000. I saw that on line somewhere, but don't recall if anyone was quoted.
