I am reading this novel for school over the summer. Has anyone ever read it? I am on probably the 4th chapter and it is quite slow. So I am hoping it gets better.

It wasn't my cup of tea! I'm not one for the Puritan era! Don't expect a happy ending - for some reason every book required for school has to be depressing!
I got rather lost in all the symbolism - the rose outside the jail door, etc. However, the suspense does pick up towards the end. Stick with it and read it carefully - the language and word choice made it hard to follow for me. But it does get better! It's very dramatic right up to the end - a bit like a Puritan soap opera!

Yes, that was what I thought. Well, perhaps my interest in it will pick up. Thanks for the info though!

I'm having the same issue with "Crime and Punishment"! I can't stand it! I know I should read it; I've gotten about half way through with it, but I just can't force myself to finish! It's just an awful book! I can't keep my attention focused on it and I can't relate to it at all! It's just absolute torture so I feel your pain completely!

Oh yes, now that story is quite hard to get through! It has a good idea behind it, but just too much at times. I didn't even get all the way trough it. That's what SparkNotes is for!

Oh God. I had to read this for school once too, and let me tell you... it was the worst experience ever. Doesn't it seem to take about an hour to read one chapter?? Good luck with that one.

Ah, lovely. Yes, an hour per chapter feels about right. I'm only on chapter three. But I've been busy reading books on writing. Far more interesting and worth my time than this book.

I'm currently reading it for our "silent reading time" and it's beginning to get easier to read. At least my teacher doubled the number of pages i've read because of this book.
