I like that idea so much! I have never read the Silmarillion before (I came close once ) and the Hobbit is one of my favourite books!
I don't usually have the chance to discuss my love for/obsession with all things Hobbity with other people (outside the Forum), so this is really a blessing!

I don't know if there will be enough people who want to read LotR every year but we can, when people are interested, read other books by Tolkien like The Hobbit or The Silmarillion. Especially the last one could be interesting because it's a difficult book that might be easier to read together with other people.

I went to the library today nad borrowed The Silmarillion, and I was suprised by how hard it was to read, I don't know if I will finish it, it seems to heavy for me
|
No, it's okay, you can nod. Because it's true, I am insane.

Just keep reading. It doesn't matter if you don't understand everything or if you can't remember all those difficult names. That's the way I did it when I first read The Silmarillion. I've read it a few times since and every time, it gets easier.
Quote:What a great idea to use the copy as a bookmark! I think I'll steal that idea I bought myself brand-new copies of the books, including The Hobbit. One of my brothers have the books I read when I was 12. They're probably worth something now
|
Do you have any idea of the publishing date? It's mainly those editions that were printed before 1960 that are worth some money.
To give you an indication: a first edition - first printing of "The Hobbit" from 1937 is worth up to 20.000$

Then I guess we could do an exception... The only important thing is to enjoy the reading...

I'm not sure if I've posted in this thread yet or not (that's how bad my memory is these days ), but I am planning to give it a shot to read along. I am working hard to finish up some other reading material so that I'll be ready to start with you next week and I will try to keep up, but no promises.
I have read them twice before - once in the summer of 1987 and again in January-February or maybe March of 2004, so that might help me a bit if I have to skim or something to keep up.
I think this is a fantastic idea and I like the idea of doing the Hobbit, Silmarillion (both of which I've read - twice and once respectively) and maybe other Tolkien books (I've never read any others). I hope this group sticks and that I can keep up with everything. What fun!
(Part of the reason that I may have trouble keeping up is that I go to a monthly book discussion at my local library, so it's actually a real life reading group that may make it hard to keep up with this one. A little ironic, huh? )

Question :
Is it normal if I don't see in the schedule, the introduction, with part of the Hobbits (concerning hobbits...)
