Hi there. Has anyone read Frankenstein? I've just started to read it and its brilliant. Relevant for today too, with the whole cloning issue and all...

Yeah, the book is really boring in my opinion, but its relevance to society as a whole is astounding! Like with the whole cloning issue, you never know exactly what you're going to get, and we as humans let our curiousity get the best of us. It's kind of scary how it shows us that one day something like that could very easily happen to us.

Hmm, When I read it, i didn't think so much of the cloning issue, but I did think indeed of the warnings the book gives us. It doesn't warn us so much against science, but of the people who wield it. the scientist is so consumed by the fact that he knows how to make a human creature, that he doesn't stop to consider the morality and the aestatics of it, doesn't think of the consequences. Also, he didn't really care about what he had created and his creation took revenge on him. that's another warning from Mary Shelley.(?)
Don't you think Frankensteins monster is a bit like the atomic bomb?
P.S the most horrific thing in the book to me was that it showed the way people treat each other, how self-centered we are in chasing our ambitions.

I never thought of the atomic bomb thing before. Nice point. I noticed the theme of the rape of nature, the way Frankenstein bypasses the natural order of things when he creates the Monster.
Frankenstein and Robert Walton are so obsessed with glory its scary how selfish they are, you're right.

Yeah, it really opened up a view of how unaccepting society really is. And it's so true, we all really can be that horrible to one another.

I think we might have started reading abit of that a school. i want to read it but have so many other books to get through first.......I remember in the film....uh the monster sliding around on the floor naked,.... ewww.... and uh the girl made for him setting herself on fire....... and that girl being hung without a sac over her eyes. That was really horrible for her mainly as she did not even do the crime she was killed for....it must be soo horrid to die like that

If Victor had put more thought and love into his creation, do you think it still would have been seen as a monster in the eyes of society?

I don't think so. People were afraid of him even though he was quite gentle because he looked like a monster. Victor couldn't have changed that. People were just quick to judge because of his appearance.

But what if they found out about his unnatural origins. Like if you found out that somebody you knew was made from the parts of carcasses, what would you think?

You mean would people understand him better if they knew how he was "born"?
