I'm and alto , though people call me bariton...probably totease, but hey. My voice can go really high sometimes though, but it sounds kinda...freaky....eerie. i also get those boyish lilts and squeaks sometimes. I don't sing in a choir, i sings with a microphone attached to my sister's digital piano. and i sing my own songs, which mean taht at least they're accustomed to my low ish voice

| haha my teacher often likes to place me in the tenor section when we have to sing songs... we only have one real tenor... so yeah. I've been called baritone too... yes to tease me haha. I get the same thing with the eerie sound haha. it's rather funny actually...

Okay, so I know we have to have some good singers here...Is singing like anything else? Practice makes perfect? Because I don't often sing and I sing this song in the musical and the voice coach said "you have a nice voice but you need to excerise it." Yeaaaaaah.

I'm apparently a second sop, we had choir in school and it was so fun!! I have to practice to keep my voice in shape and professional training would be soooo great, but i would never be able to become professional which is really sad because i love singing and being on stage! I think i will be an actor insteed

I do. I love singing. I've had lessons for about three years now and i did my grade 8 last year. My teacher wants me to do a performance diploma in my gap year. I love playing the piano and singing along, it's great. There are so many books of songs out there, and i only have a few.
I think i'm a soprano, but i've got a big range, just under three octaves.

In a way, it is, but the practice doesn't have to be as concentrated as other instruments. Actually, i'm probably not the best person to answer that, as i've got perfect pitch, i find getting the right notes really easy. That said, a lot of the practice that i do (excercising my voice or what not), is just singing along to records and stuff. If you're singing in a musical you just need to learn how to project, without straining your voice.

Just wondering.. I LOVE to sing more than anything, & for years I wanted to become a famous singer. I'm in a singing/dancing group at my university, & do a little stuff on the side, but that's about as far as my "dream" ever got.
What about yall?

Thanks for starting this thread Faith. I've sung for a number of years and hope it brings you as much joy as it brings me.
Funnily enough, I started singing with a band this week. Actually it's been a really odd week, where all sorts of opportunities have opened up for me. I went in for an interview at a photography studio and the photographer has a band. I ended up singing with them the past couple of days and hanging out on Staten Island at these cool little clubs. We even hung out at a guitar store yesterday and I looked into buying a cheap left-handed electric guitar.
The only down side is that they are into 1970s country-rock type stuff and I'm not. I'd rather sing Elvis Costello/Green Day type stuff, more poppy punk. I kinda have a rocker's voice. So I pulled back from it today and am getting my bearings, because it's all happening too fast. I need a friggin' stable job before I can jam with a band!
So anyway, that's the skinny. I'm here in my room thinking about it all.

I've taken some singing lessons here and there. I think I'm an alto. Sometimes I do have trouble finding songs. I actually find I'm somewhere in Bono's range!...Also, I do really well with Aimee Mann songs (she used to sing with Til Tuesday).
If I could do whatever I wanted for a living it would be to sing. It's a dream of mine. I'm planning on starting a band this summer....keep your fingers crossed...

Go for it, RedSonja! I have issues with my voice too; I seem to be missing an octave the middle and I'm learning to work around it. I try to practice every day and not shy away from the high notes. You gotta pound the hell out of them to make it work. Singing is a confidence game is what I am learning.
Seriously, have you heard those piece of crap finalists on American Idol? Shameful, utterly shameful. If those weirdos can do it, I'm sure we can!
Get out there and belt it sister!

Thanks for the confidence booster, Street!! That's so sweet of you.
I used to think one was only considered a good singer if you could hit high notes, but I quickly learned that's not the case. I think a "unique" voice is really important too. My voice can go pretty low, but anything above a C is pretty tough!
And you're right the daily practice helps so much. Sad thing is, I haven't really had much time to do it. I need to get on the ball!
I haven't watched AI this season, but from what little I've seen, the talent is severely lacking. Actually, it always has. I hate that type of mainstream sound. I mean, they ALL sound the same. One of my fave singers is Dave Gahan from Depeche Mode. Just for once I'd love to see a guy on that show with a voice like his.
