I had a thread in the Misc. section (Look @ George (OK...) and I went to reply and discovered one of the mods locked it...I'd like to know why It wasn't meant to be an eviiiil bush thread or anything...I just saw something funny he said and decided to post it....

No, it wasn't, and that was clear in the beginning.
However, that was the path it was heading down (you know, "Bush is stupid"), and I did receive a PM from someone who found it offensive, so it was locked before it could go any further. It was turning into a strictly Bush-bashing thread, which in the past has caused some problems, as you've probably seen.
Does that make sense?

Well thanks for understanding what it wasn't meant to be. And I totally understand. But actually, I haven't seen any of the "bush bashing" threads... Go figure....

I know this is an old thread, but this is just an idea: why lock that thread when people who don't like Bush want to express their feelings? There are plenty of other forums on the internet where they make designated threads or even boards where people can hate something (or love something), and not be bombarded or locked. Because this is a matter of free speech. We should be able to discuss with others what we want to, and for the people here who for example support Bush and were offended by that thread, shouldn't they have just ignored it and let others express their opinions freely? They didn't need to read that topic. It didn't necessarily concern them.
Arguably, a Christian thread on the Random Clubs and Fun Stuff board can be viewed by some people as offensive, to their religion or beliefs. It's the same kind of thing, in my opinion. I don't think closing up threads because of differing opinions is right or justifyable. For those of us who are not fond of Bush or any other controversial topics, we should have our own thread to vent and/or discuss things, and not allow debate by people who support Bush by advising them to stay away from that thread.
Just a thought.

First of all, we don't lock threads because of differing opinions. We lock threads because we feel like they are getting out of hand. People do have the right to express how they feel but we don't like to see it ending up in pure bashing (we locked a lot of Pam threads because of that, remember ). Anyway, as long as people don't learn to discuss a topic with respect for other people's opinions, the thread will be locked.
Religious threads can indeed be found offensive by people who don't share that same religion but as long as it's not used to purely attack another religion, I'm not going to lock it. Most of the time, we need a little more than a thread being "offensive" before it's locked.

I quote Miss Hazy, who was still an admin at that time and who locked the thread:
Quote:It was turning into a strictly Bush-bashing thread, which in the past has caused some problems, as you've probably seen.

It's almost a year ago, I really don't understand what's the use of bringing this up again.

So I guess the answer is yes .. it was getting out of hand and as such.. it needed to be locked. I guess this doesn't mean much but I have to agree with the religous thread thing.... I find it offensive.... so I stay away from it that's all. If one is not a Christan.. and finds it uncomfortable then I find it's just best to not get involved..... it works for me.

That's exactly what I was thinking, and I was trying to use it as a comparison. But I see that there are some differences.
Maybe this argument won't have a point anymore, but just an observation, on other forums, like for example on a TV show forum, there are separate boards for characters and the board has branches (besides general discussion) of two different threads: one for "praising" and discussing only positive stuff, and the other for "not that into you" where people who dislike the character can express it freely. People are advised on those forums not to cross over and debate or flame each other. It works pretty well to me. At least as long as the members can handle it.
