Quote from: korndogs on October 04, 2003, 11:11:13 am Wow, this is really off topic, but this isn't locked. I wonder why? Think about it
| Hmm.. I'm going to try my best not to be mean, considering I think I know exactly what you mean...
Just for the record: Even if it were locked, the moderators/administrators could still post in it...so there's really no point in locking it, if that's what you're insinuating.
AND there are plenty of off-topic discussions throughout the forum. We don't lock every single one of them!
I don't see why people make SUCH a big deal whenever stuff like this happens. It really makes me want to reconsider some of the ideas I've been suggesting to the other moderators (one of them being making the Fun Stuff slightly back to the way it was - more fun, meaningless games and not so many quizzes) but when others are being rude to us?!
I mean, honestly, why would you say something like that?

Quote from: Galadriel on October 04, 2003, 11:37:55 am It's not locked because I personally am still waiting for the answer to the questions posed...What DID she mean by that?
| I don't know about her, but I think she mean't - and I mean -not to be offensive, just to say that many threads like this seem to get locked. Sometimes I wish we could just go back to the way the forum used to be : messy, yes. But people were'nt always complaining, it was more fun, there was a lot less tension, and the mods didn't have to be so sensitive to every little implication someone posted.

I only said that because somewhere in this thread somebody said threads are locked if they are going really off topic. Right here we had at least a page of discussing nick names and such. Simply off topic. I wasn't trying to be rude, I don't go around trying to ruin anyones day just for kicks. I'm sorry to offend anyone. I was just saying practice what you preach, especially if someone in the same thread has said something to the effect of, "We only lock topics when they are really off topic"
I know what you mean Galadrial, waiting for an answer is a great reason to not lock a topic. I'm sure others are still waiting for an answer too.

| Oh, I meant UK..not korn, if that's what you thought.
Threads do get locked more often, yes, but that's just because we're trying to get the board more organized.. It's usually just the Elijah threads that end up getting locked. However, I have moved some to other sections so they could continue their "off-topic ness".. There's a lot of threads I can think of that *should* be locked, but aren't..I don't exactly know why, but it's perfectly fine by me.. It's just harmless fun.
I do think A&F was more fun (and I've brought that up to the other moderators..most recently this morning!), but it was also a bit out-of-hand..
I do think there are a lot of rules, and I think there are other ways to go about organizing A&F than making a new rule up..People don't generally respond well to yet another rule, y'know?
And about the last thing..yeah, sometimes I do take what people say about the staff here personally, because I know I'm doing the best I can, and I really do want everyone to be happy here and not hate us! It seems sometimes that people don't have any respect for us just because we're moderators (and I'm saying this because virtually every moderators has gotten rude PMs from people saying that we're horrible, etc, etc)..
Woah, didn't mean to write you an essay there..but hope that clears anything up.

| That's fine, I don't mean to hypocritical with locking threads, and if I am, feel free to call me on it.. I jsut thought you were saying because the moderators were posting off-topic things, it was left open..which wasn't the case. Like I just said (above ) usually threads are only locked for going off-topic when they're in the Elijah section, because that's the main board people come to when they register and we want to keep it really nice.
And also..like G said, she's waiting for UK to answer the question, which won't be for awhile as she's at CollectorMania..

I'm interested in hearing how to better organize a message board without the implementation of a new rule or policy.
The locking of threads is inconsistent around the board, and it is an issue the mods have yet to resolve. Picture threads are probably some of the worst offenders, actually, but they're left open because they're not discussing a particular question or issue.
If someone posts in the Elijah forum saying, "Did he date Franka Potente?" then as soon as the question is answered, it will be locked.
Not everything is such an obvious case though, in fact most aren't obvious at all. With so few topics to discuss while Elijah isn't doing publicity, these locked threads are more noticed and cared about than they otherwise would be.
When ROTK comes out, no one will care anymore.

Quote from: Alter Eggo on October 04, 2003, 01:13:43 pm I'm interested in hearing how to better organize a message board without the implementation of a new rule or policy. | Well, obviously rules help out in organizing..but we all know that people tend to react badly when another rule is added..if that makes any sense. I don't have an immediate solution, but I think we've found that compromises, no matter how small, can make a world of difference. They take may take a bit more effort, but they are worth it, I think..
Quote from: Alter Eggo on October 04, 2003, 01:13:43 pm The locking of threads is inconsistent around the board, and it is an issue the mods have yet to resolve. | Yes, definitely.. Even though we're discussing this in the Private Forum, I thought I'd let everyone know that we realize this..and we're working to change this if it's at all possible.

Okay, we're basically saying the same thing in different ways. A compromise implies a new policy, IMO.

Hey, I know this totally off topic, but I didn't want to make a new thread just for a short thing.
How do you make those words or titles of threads into links? Like those links that Spader put into the Contest fics threads?
I hope some of you can help! I know I come to the board alot. but I still don't really know what all those buttons on the reply post are for.. silly me!
