Has anyone out there read this book?

http://www.amazon.com/dp/0520247744/ref=pe_pe_606_6796750_pe_ar_t8

I think it's new so maybe not. If you have, I'd love to hear your opinion.

Hugs,

I don't know if I'd heard about this earlier but will look for it at the bookstore;  I went to the site you noted but couldn't tell when it was released.  Since Amazon had new and old copies for sale, it must have been out some time I would think.

It's new. The date of publication is in the product info:

Publisher: University of California Press; 1 edition (August 27, 2007)

I've never heard of it before but I'd love to get a hold of a copy.

I thought Ed at the comment box was reading this so I asked.  with his permission, I am copying his response here:

Quote:
Celebrian: I'm about 1/2 way through it, and it's not bad - actully better than some othe things on the film as it explores the phenomenon of mega-hits, and brings up some facts I didn;t now - but on the whole the best behind the scenes work so far on the films is m not_alones BLOG, which I hope is formally published when finished.

I had to put the Frodo Franchise aside for a bit to read research works on Sung voodoo and boogeyman stories from ancient China to give my novel some additional goosebumps - but I will return to the FF soon. I was disappointed at the slender coverage of Elijah in this whole work. What they supplied on him was old hat and very little but there was one thing:

I alwasy felt bad that Elijah (and all the actors) got only a flat million for all three films PLUS as post FPTR bonus when that work sailed to the top. BUT, the three top credited Actors also received a percentage of the three films gate (box office) and DVD proceeds - and those three were ELIJAH WOOD, IAN MCKELLAN and LIV TYLER. So, its good to know tht LIJ is ROLLING IN DOUGH from now until he's 95 or whenever he shuffles off, 'casue the box office on LOTR is the gift that will just keep giving. It also allows him to continue to swim in INDEPENDANT waters and take expensive risks like starting a Reconrd Label. Good for HIM.

Thank you so much Celebrian (and Ed) for that information.  I too always thought it was unfair the main actors weren’t paid what they were worth; I also think at least one more name should be added to those three but I’m VERY glad to see that Elijah, as lead actor was appropriately rewarded.  Good for him indeed!

I just finished this book by Kristin Thompson.  It's loaded with information about making the movies and extended DVDs, the deal making, the ups and downs....everything you could possibly want to know.  I thought I'd read enough about LOTR to know nearly all there was to know, but she has a lot of new information.  A "must read" for LOTR fans.

I just received my copy of TFF from Amazon this past weekend;  I just started reading TTT again and might put it down by this weekend if I'm not finished because I'm so curious about this book!

I finished this book last night and I did learn quite a bit of stuff.  I returned it to the library today, but looking back at this thread, I don't remember it saying that the top three credited actors got a percentage.  Maybe I'm just forgetting, though.

I've read the book, too, and don't recall a mention of any of the actors getting a percentage of anything.  I think Ed was wrong about that.

I do know in the first chapter, under Cast Away On A Polynesian Island pp 37 it reads “One or more of the top names got profit participations.” I just finished the book this week but in the midst of all the stats missed where it mentioned particulars.

No kidding....I'll have to go back and re-read it because I totally missed that.  My guess would be that Ian McKellen, Ian Holm and Christopher Lee might have had agents who pushed for that because they were the biggest names, but that's just a guess.  I've been corresponding with Kristin Thompson, so if I remember the next time I write, I'll ask her.

Now that you mention it, that does sound vaguely familiar.  I wonder where Ed got those specifics about the top three credited actors?
