I read it a while back for a book discussion group. I found it very disturbing. When I started it, I knew nothing about it and in the first few pages she was kidnapped, raped, murdered and dismembered. EEK! I found that I couldn't read it at bedtime or I found it hard to sleep, too. But, I thought it was a good book. Very interesting.
And, to someone who asked about her taking vengeance on her murderer: When she was in Ruth's body I don't really think she had time for that and Ray was much more immediate (although I agree that that was a rather odd scene). Also, she did take vengeance later. I had the distinct impression that she caused that icicle to fall and kill him. We know she could affect things on Earth a bit (a candle flame, I think? It's been about 1.5 years since I read it). I remember asking at my discussion group whether you get in trouble in heaven for murdering your murderer. 
On a different note: At some point I am sure that I read (on TORn maybe?) that there was consideration of a movie and that it was possible that Peter Jackson would direct. That could certainly be interesting.

I read this book a few months ago. I thought it was very good, I couldn't put it down. It did upset me though. I have kids, and although they're not girls, I can't imagine how horrible it would be to be this girls mother. I loved how she watched the changes in her family, how close she was to her father. It was very touching.
A movie sounds very interesting. And of course Peter Jackson directing it would be great!

I have daughters (although they are very young), so that may have been part of why I found it so disturbing. Which is not to say that I didn't seek out times to read it because I was hooked.

It would be really cool if Peter directed The Lovely Bones. Sounds like a challenge to me so it's right up his alley.

Peter Jackson has confirmed that his next film will be an adaptation of the book The Lovely Bones.
With King Kong set for release in December, rumours have been circulating as to what the Kiwi director will turn his attention to next.
In an interview with a Lord of the Rings fan magazine, Jackson and co-writer Philippa Boyens confirmed they will team up again to turn Alice Sebold's bestseller into a celluloid reality.
"One next project after King Kong is The Lovely Bones," said Boyens.
"We feel comfortable with each other. I am sure there will be other projects we do separately but at the moment, as long as it works, we'll keep doing it."
When asked about his filming agenda after King Kong, Jackson also said it would be to make The Lovely Bones.
The story is based on a 14-year-old girl watching from heaven as her family copes with her rape and murder. She narrates the story as she watches the turmoil they go through. She is also able to observe the man who murdered her and the path his life takes.
The book, published in 2002, has sold millions of copies worldwide and has been praised by critics for its unusual perspective. It was described by the New York Times as "an uplifting book about the abduction and murder of a young girl".

I loved this book, what I found so interesting about it was that the story itself was so potentially traumatic and distressing that I might have found it impossible to read. However it was so well written it didn't fall into morbid or maudlin sentiment which it could so easily have done.
One thing that really struck me was finally reading the explanation of what The Lovely Bones really were. I just imagined it was to do with her skeleton but it was described and I do this from memory as the framework of the family that she left behind, the structure of the relationships that were rebuilt, reframed, reorganised and indeed established. That was such a lovely idea, please feel free to let me know if I have that wrong.
And yes I read in our paper this week that Peter Jackson has bought the rights to write along with Fran Walsh and Phillipa and then direct
the film version of The Lovely Bones, which I shall look forward to seeing, if it ever happens.

I'd like to read it again. Due to my bad memory i've forgotten the majority of it 0_o And i want to finish reading Lucky because i only ever read a few chapters. I'm such a bad reader.
Anyway, i can't believe the Lovely Bones could be made into a film. And for it to be directed by Peter Jackson. Amazing! That'd be an interesting film.

I think it's a bit too early to discuss this in the other media section There's nothing known about the movie anyway - except that Peter is going to direct it - so it's basically only a book right now.
