Q&A: Elijah Wood

by Rosanna Greenstreet - The Guardian

Born in Iowa, Elijah Wood, 33, started out as a child actor. At 18, he was cast as Frodo Baggins in The Lord Of The Rings trilogy. His subsequent films include Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, Sin City, Bobby, Happy Feet and Grand Piano, which is out on DVD on 20 October. He lives in both L.A. and Texas.

When were you happiest?
Now: I am doing all the things that I always hoped I would do. I am still working as an actor, and also DJ-ing.

What is your greatest fear?
I don't fear death or aging, but I fear them in other people that I am close to.

What is your earliest memory?
I was probably three or four and at a family party in Cedar Rapids. My mom had gotten this page boy outfit for me and I had to pee but was afraid to ask for the loo, so I peed myself.

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?
Probably laziness.

What is the trait you most deplore in others?
Lack of consideration.

What is top of your bucket list?
For a while it was to eat at El Bulli, but then it closed. I have always wanted to go to the Maldives. I have never been skydiving. My bucket list tends to relate to travel or eating.

Property aside, what's the most expensive thing you've bought?
Audio equipment for home listening.

What is your most treasured possession?
My vinyl records. I also treasure my ring from The Lord Of The Rings. Andy Serkis has one; I think Martin Freeman has one too. They were bestowed upon us by Peter Jackson as a gift for working on the films.

What is your favorite smell?
I love the smell right after a storm.

What is your favorite word?
Fuck.

What is your screensaver?
I collect images from websites, and my screensaver is linked to a folder of strange random images from around the world. I run them through my Apple TV as well.

What would your super power be?
At a restaurant once, I noticed that the waitress - a beautiful waitress - had a nose that, when she was growing up, maybe people picked on her for. But it was a defining feature and made her unique. It would be an amazing super power to be able to make every person you meet feel better about the thing that makes them insecure.

What makes you unhappy?
It is not an emotion that I feel often.

Who would play you in the film of your life?
Daniel Radcliffe, because we get mistaken for each other. People often get The Lord Of The Rings and Harry Potter confused.

What is your guiltiest pleasure?
I like watching romantic comedies.

What was the best kiss of your life?
I would say my last girlfriend, but for sheer excitement, the best kiss was with a woman for whom I had held a secret love, when she revealed that she felt the same way. Nothing can beat that moment of being able actually to act on your feelings.

Who would you invite to your dream dinner party?
I would love to sit down with Paul McCartney.

What song would you like played at your funeral?
I know what I would play at my wedding: This Will Be Our Year, by the Zombies.

What is the most important lesson life has taught you?
Humility.
