Does art have a purpose?

This is for my art coursework at school and I thought it would be interesting to see what everyone here thought.

- Does art have a purpose?
- What is the point of art?
- Should art have a purpose? Should all have a purpose?
- If art does have a purpose, then what purpose?

I'd be grateful if you have time just to leave a reply here and let me know what you think on this subject!

Thanks in advance.

- Does art have a purpose?
Yes it does

- What is the point of art?
It has several points:
* It makes you look at things differently
* It makes you think about things
* It's entertaining
* It's to make a statement
* For some artists it's a way to cope or to relax

- Should art have a purpose? Should all have a purpose?
Yes, because people want to know the idea that comes along with the art. We people want reasons for things, we want to know why the piece of art is made and how it is made and what it symbolizes.

- If art does have a purpose, then what purpose?
I think it's the same question as question number 2

I hope I helped Good luck!!

Does art have a purpose?
Some art has a purpose, some doesn't.

What is the point of art?
Many things...
To give an opinion on a subject matter.
To tell a story.
To express your feelings. It can be used in the same way a diary or journal is.
For enjoyment.
It is dependant on each individual artist and piece of work as to what the point is. You cannot say that all art has the same point, because the point of each piece of work is unique to itself.

Should art have a purpose? Should all have a purpose?
For me, art doesn't need a purpose in order to be enjoyed. It would be interesting to know what the artist was thinking when they produced the piece of work, but it is not necessary. Art can be interpreted in many different ways by different people. Personally it spoils it for me when people tell me the story of a piece of work, I prefer to imagine it for myself. There lies the enjoyment. But I have a friend who cannot enjoy art unless she knows the purpose and the story behind it. Everyone is different in their tastes.

If art does have a purpose, then what purpose?
I think I might have covered this in the previous question

Hope this helps. Good luck with your coursework

- Does art have a purpose?

Yes it does

- What is the point of art?

all the points that have been mentioned above, and to beatify our life

- Should art have a purpose? Should all have a purpose?

yes, but it depends on your point of view, what could i see it meaningless and without purposes, you could find it contain a lot of meanings and purposes!

- If art does have a purpose, then what purpose?

purpose could be different from person to another , for me the purpose is to beautify our life, like roses do

Thanks all for your replies, I'm getting plenty to think about!  Tafika, I personally I agree with you when you say you prefer to imagine what a piece of art is about myself rather than hear what someone else thinks, because I think the perspective changes from person to person.

I know this is a big topic, but I bet it'll be pretty interesting to write about! Thanks again everyone for your help, thoughts and advice.

Interesting topic Mary...

1.  Yes, imo Art has MANY different purposes.

2.  The point of Art is that it is an external expression of the artist's personal thoughts, beliefs, or feelings.

It is also a popular form of decoration, a means of beautifying our environment, and of making a social, political, or religious statements.

In hindsight, Art can often be used as a barometer of the "style" and beliefs of a particular era.

3.  I don't believe that ALL art needs to have a higher purpose, other than for beautification, entertainment or relaxation purposes - either for the artist or the viewer.

However, it often DOES serve a greater purpose and this can be one of its most important functions.

4.  Not only can art be used as a form of decoration, or as a record of history (portraits of famous figures for example)... it can be used to stir up debate and controversary thereby becoming an agent of social change.

Hope this helps, tho the above posters have already answered your questions eloquently!

Hi MARYD!

This is my first post on the A&F forum and Iíd be glad if it is helpful to you

Does art have a purpose?
Art can or cannot have a purpose. It depends upon the creatorís view.

What is the point of art?
Art can express a variety of feelings.
It can express the artistís point of view, belief or vision.
It can induce a state or feeling to the viewer.
Art can have several motifs (e.g. beauty, music, religion, antagonism, motion and so on); it can cover symbols or be surrounded by mystery.
Some art tends to be and can be the model of perfection, it is eye-catching and it can seem surreal.
Art can bring to life imagination and creativity, feelings and expressions in a way that nothing else can.
Art is thought-provoking and sometimes intriguing.
Art can take color/shape/expression in infinite forms.
It is amazing, art is Godís gift to people and it is a part of our life even if we care about it or not.

Should art have a purpose? Should all have a purpose?
Art should have a purpose for the ones who search for it or need to find a purpose. Those who donít need or want a purpose could see art in a different light or perspective and maybe analyze it more objectively, practically eliminating the search of answers driven by personal feelings.
Humans have evolved through their search for self-discovery and curiosity, hunger for knowledge and adventure, all in all, to find lifeís purpose. Almost all has or should have in a smaller or greater way a purpose; itís the way God made everything, with a purpose. There will always be things without a purpose but I think that the most important things in life should definitely have a purpose.

If art does have a purpose, then what purpose?
Art can have the purpose of catching the viewerís attention, enchanting the senses, expressing feelings, beliefs, notions, motifs or symbols, creating a unique relationship between it, its creator and the viewer.
Art can be a unique expression of beauty and natureís rules.
Art can have the purpose of lifting the soul and heightening the human senses, it is indispensable to some, like music, a part of the universe which goes in complete accordance with its laws.

Well, this is my opinion, good or wrong, I donít know. Hope it is helpful for your art coursework. Best wishes sweetie!

*Hugs*

Does art have a purpose?
It can

- What is the point of art?
It depends on the artist and/or the viewer. I think art is a form of expression and whether or not an artist is concious of what their art is representing about them it does represent something. however i don't think it's necessary for it to be understood or analysed. I also believe people observing art take from it what's relevant to their lives, particularly in abstract art people can take completely different things from the experience. So i believe art is an outlet for the artist and the viewer to express ideas and release emotions that maybe words aren't adequate to express.

- Should art have a purpose? Should all have a purpose?
Again i think all art has a purpose because it's been created. the issue of how significant the purpose is is another thing. Art can be created to overcome boredom, to express a message, to honor a person, to provoke thought etc. Not all art needs to be created with a grand purpose though.

- If art does have a purpose, then what purpose?
It is the purpose that motivates the artist to create the art in the first place. as i said above it may be that someone does a painting because they're bored and the enjoy the act of creating, or they may compose a piece of music that represents a political movement.
I also think art has a purpose to the audience similarly. You take from art what you like and it may be meerly entertainment or the art might speak to you about an important issue and inspire etc.

anyway hope that helps!

Does art have a purpose?
Art is life, life is art. As soon as you can see, beauty becomes you. Art is beauty and all sorts of other things , when you are a baby, you are attracted to objects, colors. sound. Art is life. Art has the sole purpose of bettering our existence in this world. When you cut a flower to put into a vase, it is art. When you buy that sneaker with the design on it , that is art. When you style your hair the way a model or someone has in a photograph(art) that is art Art is life.

Does art have a purpose?, Albert Einstein said it was better to be artistic and creative than anything else because you would always look to a creative solution for things.

Art always has a purpose, whether is is to get a reaction whether the reaction is positive or negative, whether it is to inform (media) whether it is to reflect (Picasso's Guernica) about history, whether it is to show life as it is in history (Egyptian art) whether it is to create comfort (architecture, chairs, beds, towels blankets etc) Art Always has a purpose.

Being an art teacher , I'm always ecplaining this to my students, I hope this helped you

Maryd, I am honored to have met you sweetie and all other wonderful friends on A&F! Best wishes for your art coursework! Iím sure youíll do great!

Funny thing, the other night I fell asleep with my TV on and my mom came in the middle of the night and asked me something like ďWhat do you need that for?Ē (I think she was pointing towards my sisterís mobile cause Iíve put 2 alarms, on my mobile and on hers, in order to assure myself that I would wake up on time in the morning ) and I answered to her hardly awake: ďItís an art course on the site!Ē (I was thinking about your art coursework and A&F)ÖLOL! In the morning I realized I had been between the state of dreaming and reality.

Hey, Maryd.  I'm not sure I have anything useful to add to what others have written, but I did want to pop in here.  I think that artists express themselves through their art and make other people think often in new ways when they view the art.  I'm not sure all art needs to have a really deep purpose, but it can be a manner of expression and interpretation and doesn't need to be more than that.
