Seeing as how we are talking about this subject in the abortion thread I made a new one for you to discuss..

I said no, because I feel euthanasia is never right.  Maybe this is my religion speaking through, but I don't believe anyone has right to take a life.  Imagine the impact it would have on your family.  Sorry if this does offend anyone.

I voted "Depends."

Case in point: Terri Schiavo.  (Google it if you don't remember the case.)

My husband and I discussed it, and we decided that if either of us ever ends up like her, just let -- or even help -- us go.  Lying helplessly in a bed not knowing who you are, much less recognizing your loved ones?  That's no kind of life.  You're like a baby who will never grow up, but you'll get worse and worse, and bankrupt whoever is paying for your care.

IMO, anyone who fights to keep such a person alive is being selfish, because he/she just doesn't want to let the person go.  The person is probably suffering; let it stop.

And before you ask, yes, I have had to make such a decision.

like i stated in the Abortion thread, it depends on any given situation. I just think morally speaking it has not been deemed legal because it is difficult to draw lines on who is or is not eligible for euthanasia it is hard for someone else to say who is right and wrong. But in the matter of diseases which leave people with high mental activity and low to no physical capability imagine yourself in their position .

I voted No. For same reason as Mai. I can understand why people may want their lives ended, but I just could not do it.

A valid point, Starladear.  If we euthanize animals to end their suffering, why not show humans the same respect?

That's an interesting point - although I'm against euthanising humans, I feel for animals it is better to put them out of their pain.  It is quite thought-provoking.  I just feel for a human it would hurt so many people.

I disagree, I think it is merciful, however that is one of the issues if you allow euthanasia for some where do you draw a line. but as it being suicide??? No it is not in circumstances where one will suffer horribly before they finally succumb it is just like taking them off life support. But seriously until someone is faced with watching someone they love SUFFER they can't honestly comment on what is or is not right because they have NEVER been in that situation. I believe that someone like Stephen Hawking for example has every right in the world to opt out of being trapped inside his body. please look up the detrimental effects a disease like ALS has on someone especially someone like Stephen Hawking then tell me what you think. I just hope that those who are hiding behind religion and morals never have to walk in someone else' shoes. And remember your rules should then apply to ALLL OF GODS creatures not just those who are human!!!

I said depends.

It should only be carried out when ...

- The person requests it when they were of sound mind and the request has been recorded in a legal document, and it should be BEFORE the illness has taken a great effect, before they're in pain and before any kind of mental deterioration takes place. For someone else to make the decision or to decide when the person isn't of sound mind, it shouldn't be done as it may not be what the person wishes, and their family acting out of either hurt from seeing their relative in pain, or because they're fed up of caring for them. That is unacceptable.

- The person has no quality of life - I honestly think it is wrong to keep someone alive just because you can. When someone is at the stage where they can no longer care for themselves, cannot even be left alone, is in constant pain or confined to a space due to illness, it's wrong. I would hate to be like that, and I've thought to myself when I get to the age that I am relying on medication to keep me alive and being a burden to my family because I can't take care of myself, I'll just stop taking the drugs and let myself go.

My Grandad has just come out of hospital, and he is fine now. But when he first went in things looked really bad. He signed a DNR then because he didn't want to be brought round to end up being a 'vegetable' or a burden on us. Thankfully none of that happened and he is recovering. But under the circumstances I think he made the right decision.
