It's a very controversial topic. I agree with Myriad. The life of a baby starts at the moment of conception. For women who were rape and later got pregnant the decision is very hard. If they don't want the child which is obvious, they can give the baby for adoption. Many women  who suffer infertility problems are anxious to adopt a child. Rapists should be punish with life in prison after they are castrated.
Miscarriage is different than an abortion, is not the mother's fault because the baby in her womb is wanted not rejected.

If the baby is severely deformed or you have an etopic pregnancy, then surgery is necessary to save the life of the mother.
It's not fair to kill a healthy baby.
I saw abortions videos and they are horrendous
Most people said that a fetus is not considered a person. That's wrong!!  an unborn baby has feelings. You feel the heartbeat. In those 3D sonograms you can see what the baby is doing. I was a preemie baby and here I am writing about this issue.

but what you have just brought up about an egg being fertilized is a child, raises the question about fertility treatments. Woman who have a hard time conceiving harvest their eggs and their husband sperm, Woman often harvest 50-60 eggs the doctors fertilize them in a lab then place them in the woman's uterus 7 or 8 at a time this is why in vitro often results in multiples. That being said if the procedure works the remaining fertilized eggs usually around 30 are therefore 30 dead children

As an Obstetrician let me say that is not exactly right. Law in most countries only allows to place 2 eggs at a time, so to avoid a multiple pregnancy. And I can assure you that a number of 50 or 60 eggs are never fertilized.
The problem remains to be what to do with those fertilized eggs that are not placed into the mother.

Well as I said that is an unsolved issue. They are kept in special "banks" in some sort of frozen state... but how long??

I see. It seems an awful shame if they were never used and had to be destroyed after a while. I wonder how long they are kept frozen, months, years? Thanks for clearing that up for me Enara

You are welcome.
I think they kept them frozen for years. Some scientist are trying to get permisson from authorities to use them for medical investigation.

But then they would destroy them for investigating? I hope they don't get permission!

Yes, the idea is using the cells, I don´t know the right expression in English; but there is a kind of cells named "mother cells" and by investigating them it may be possible to find the cure to diabetes, leukemia and some other kinds of cancer.

I'm pro-choice. I believe a woman's body and everything that comes with is her own and no one has the right to tell her what to do with it.
If she decides to get an abortion, it's on her karma and no one else's.
I don't know what I would personally do if I were pregnant. I use birth control to prevent that (a novel concept). But if there were to be an accident (I hate calling conception that. I'd prefer to call it a surprise), I'd probably try to raise the kid, only because I don't think I could mentally and emotionally handle the aftermath of an abortion.
Abortion isn't for everyone, some people wouldn't be able to handle the emotional baggage the understandably comes with it.

My question for those who oppose abortion: "Are YOU willing to adopt all those unwanted babies?"
The flaw with adoption is that not every kid gets adopted. Few people adopt children with physical and mental disabilities and they become wards of the state, never knowing the joy of a loving family.

^ I appreciate what you say, Faerie, that not every child gets adopted.  But I think it is better to give the child a chance at life instead of aborting it before it has even properly lived.

I understand where you are coming from with your reasons for pro - choice Faerie. I myself am against abortion esp after seeing vids on you tube abt them So sad Mark uses birth control so we don't get pregnant. It has worked for 9 yrs so far, touchwood.. If I were to get pregnant by mistake I would keep the baby. Every new life should be treasured as it is a precious thing. Not something to discard and throw into a bin like many are. I have thought of adopting would be so nice to think of helping an unwanted child. We shall see..

Everyone refers to the Videos, these are ANTI ABORTION videos they are meant to shock and awe anyone who watches them. I ask you though to consider the flip side ever watch the video's of babies born addicted to crack?? what about the ones who are born with FAS???  Ever read about the cage bed babies? or most recently we can take into account little Baby P. If his mother had aborted a child that she clearly did not want then a child would not have suffered through what he suffered through. To top it all off the authorities were involved and yet he still fell through the cracks and suffered at the hands of the one person who should have protected him and now all he is is a statistic in a long line of abused and neglected children!

Yes I understand that Starleader. I am well aware of babies born addicted to heroin, I have a very sad film about that(true story) I am also aware of the caged babies, again very sad.

A shame some people are allowed to be parents when all they can give their children is abuse and neglect But that is the argument isnt it..do we have pro-choice where anyone can have a baby aborted or pro-life where anyone can have a baby regardless of if it will have a good life..you decide..

This is not directed to anyone personally, that being said..

I think the word choice should be the deciding factor in the argument, it is still a woman's body that has to go through the changes that pregnancy necessitates and taking that choice out of her hands is wrong. If we start governing the way a woman can or can not treat her body then where will it stop ok no abortions, next no fatty food? it is a dangerous slope when others decide how some should live their lives especially considering the only person that has to live with the repercussions of said procedure is the woman that has it done. I think to be completely frank, that it should not even be up for discussion, what a complete stranger does is her business and really all those pro lifers should butt-out. It has nothing to do with them or anyone else. and BTW on a side note where abortion IS illegal, woman ARE STILL HAVING THEM, they just go to places that are out of the way and ungoverned, that is scary back alley abortions still happen because too many people have too much time on their hands and decide that it is better to get up in someone else' business. We live in a society where there are FAR MORE IMPORTANT crusades than abortion.
