It shows pictures of various people, listing their height, weight and BMI. I found it very interesting.

Yes, that link was interesting and puts things in better perspective doesn't it?  Age plays a factor as well but I must say that woman who was listed as obese had good arm muscles that I'd like.

Welcome, Elwood!  At work we just started a wellness program and it hooked us up with the Mayo Clinic website. It is a wealth of information and depending on your age, height, weight and level of activity. They recommend that women trying to lose weight who weigh 250lbs or less should eat 1200 calories a day and make sure to eat lots of veggies & fruit.

Remember the closer you are to your goal weight that harder it is to lose the pounds.  For me I am about 41 lbs overweight...so I am planning to lose 2lbs a week by sticking to the 1200 calories, eating my veggies and fruits, cutting back on most desserts and working out faithfully 45 minutes a day.  My goal is to lose the weight over a six month time frame. Ugh...wish me luck!

We are happy to have you join us and cheer you one. Just make sure you are going about weightloss in a healthy manner...sometimes a quick visit to the doctor will help get you going in the right direction. Good luck and hope to see you around this thread frequently

Thank you for the great support Culpie!
i really thought people would react negativly so a positive reaction has really made my day! :D
Best of luck with your dieting o hope you come out gorgeous at the end of it!!
Something that has really helped me is writting quotes on my hands like "Nothing tastes as good as thin feels." and " TEMPTATION" in big bold letters just as a little reminder when i go to grab something i dont need to eat.
thank you!!!

Heh heh...I don't know about the gorgeous, but thinner would be great.

I love your quotes! It is a good idea!

You can count on me for positive feedback anytime, Elwood!  Positive is a better motivator than negative.

I have had it with my self today folks!  As of tomorrow I am going to make it  point to start an exercise and diet program that I will stick with and I am going to make a commitment to come in here evey day and comment that I did something constructive.

Time for a lifestyle change!  And maybe some new hair.  And for the record as soon as I'm done typing that chocolate ice cream is going in the trash.

huzzah! Good for you.  I made a similar decision last week and i exercised every day monday-saturday. AND i ate good. I was proud of myself. And it paid off! I lost 7 lbs this week! (Now, i know we have people from all over and that some of you may work in kilos or, um ... stones. ... but i'll say right now ... i have NO idea what any of that is. haha. So my posts will probably all talk about lbs. haha, sorry.)

By the end of March i'd like to be 20 lbs thinner. Back down to 180. ^_^ then before summer i wanna weigh 160. I've never weighed 160 before ever. You just gotta decide that you're gonna do it and stick with it.

I glanced back at the talks about BMI, and I felt the need to say that BMI is definitly not the most reliable way of telling if you're overweight or not. Well, this is me in my thinner days:

I weighed ... oooh, what was it ... 182ish. According to my BMI, I was in the "overweight" catagory. But, uh ... lol, well I don't think I look overweight in that picture. BMI doesn't account for fat to muscle ratio (muscle weighs more than fat). it also doesn't account for bone structure. So i'm 5'10" and definitly have a "large" bone structure... BMI calculators only account for my height.

and in the words of Forrest Gump: That's all i've got to say about that.

Ugh. All I am going to say is that it's SO hard to be a teenager and be overweight, even slightly.
Guys don't like you, girls don't like you, just people in general judge you before they even know you.
And people that do struggle with their weight, like me, are usually VERY self concious about it. If someone even makes a fat joke partially directed towards me I will break down and cry.

I know, people are mean about that... and then you have these people who're totally skinny and they say: ugh, I feel fat.... and then you say: hellooooo you think I'm fat?! Two of you fit in one pair of pants of mine! And then they say: Noooo you're not fat at alll!!!! But I am..

Oh my that pisses me off lol. But yeah people can be cruel, even when you watch what you eat, people ae mean about it... and then when they offer you food and you say no, they're like: "You're not watching what you eat, are you?! God, stop doing that... you're skinny enough... here just eat" ... boys usually do that with me but then I feel even more uncomfortable, because I dunno...

aww, ew3, i know exactly how you feel. when i was in middle school/ early high school i would have people make comments to me all the time. There were the "mean boys" that would do it "just because they could" ... and I even had some people who were "friends" that would say little offhand comments to me that always really hurt my feelings.

If I were you and I wanted to lose weight, I would first do some research to find out how overweight you are and then what a healthy weight for you would be. You could do this by talking to your doctor, or just doing some research online. http://www.bmi-calculator.net/body-fat-calculator/ That website is one of the more simplistic ones for calculating your body fat. And knowing your BMI can be helpful too, but just remember to take it with a grain of salt.

Then begin watching what you eat and exercising more. My doctor told me I should try to eat 20 or less grams of fat per day, and drink 8 glasses of water (it makes you pee a lot which is kind of obnoxious, but when i was really strict and did what she said, i lost like 8 lbs in 2 weeks without exercising)

My personal favorite workouts come from beachbody.com ... i've used power 90, slim in 6, and turbo jam. p90 is a good program. si6 worked well, but focused more on hips/butt, which isn't really my problem areas, so i didn't care for it much. My favorite has been turbo jam. It's what i've been exercising with this past week. It's a lot of fun, too. Primarily works your abs which is what i need most. But, of course, you don't have to buy anything to work out. I just feel like i get the most out of my time and effort when i do those tapes.

anyway, that's a long post, but i hope it helps.

Helloooooo...ladies! Great idea! I plan to pop in at least once a week and give a report of my weekly activities.

My plan is to lose 41lbs by June. My bro is getting married and I want to buy a nice cute dress for the occassion. So this is part of my motivation.

Yeah, middle school was really hard for me, because I went to a private school where there was 4 girls in my class, and I was the least prettiest out of all of them... and the boys would tell me I was fat and ugly.
Needless to say, it scarred me for life.
And the thing is that I didn't know how much or how long it would affect me.

The worst part is that I am not like, HUGE or anything, probably like 25 or 30 pounds overweight, but I have like THEEEEE hugest boobs EVER so it's difficult to wear shirts, because they make me grow a whole shirt size.
So it's really difficult and makes me think I am like THEEEEE hugest person IN the world, and the only time I don't feel that way is when I am around people who are bigger than me, and then I just feel uber guilty.
And my best friends have always been GORGEOUS and PERFECT size 0, so it makes me look even bigger when I am around them, because they are so tiny.
Sooo.
it's been a long and hard battle that slowly wears away at my self confidence.
And it hurts.
And I feel like I can't do anything about it.
But I bet that if I just ate better, like healthier, then I would lose weight. But it's hard, when all the good food is fatty.
I really need to try, but it really is just hard sometimes.

Thanks for the Kudo's Jess

I didn't do too bad today.  I worked up a sweat...but only to eat a brownie later

It's hard with my husband, having to cook 2 meals (roast veggies for me...barbecue pork for him).

I hope to do 1-2lbs per week.  I'd be happy even just to have a healtheir over all lifstlye.
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
And ElijahWoodx3...

Some middle school kids are just cruel and rotten.  I got told (by other kids) that I was fat and ugly too in middle school...and it wasn't true...far from it at the time.

Go figure.

That age bracket is a difficult one, full of peer stress, and sometimes kids are just plain mean to eachother.

If you went to a school that was that small, then you should realize that their opinion is not the popular opinion. If three or four people single you out and pick on you, the reason isn't because you actually deserve it ... it's because you're in such a small area that the people are afraid of being picked on themselves, so they target you. Kind of like trying to keep the focus off themselves, if you know what i mean. But that in no way means that you are ACTUALLY "fat and ugly" ... it just means that you were surrounded by a small group of immature morons who were afraid of being picked on themselves.

What you need to do is realize your own self worth. I remember I was in this vicious cycle of self-hate. I hated that I was fat, but I felt like I deserved my own hate, so I would eat more to make myself fatter. Then i actually realized what i was doing one day, and that i didn't deserve that. You're a good, beautiful person, and you deserve to see yourself as such! So decide what you need to do to improve your self worth, and work on that.

As far as big boobs go ... I really have no idea how to deal with that. lol. I have very small boobs. very... small.  have you tried getting a good bra from Victoria's secret? You could try watching that "what not to wear" show on tlc. they talk about problems with finding clothes to work with bigger breasts sometimes.

Valkyrie -

haha, you should just make your husband eat the healthy food! If he complains, tell him that if he doesn't like it, he should make his own! lol.

As for my own, personal, update... According to the scale, I have lost 10 lbs since last monday. which, uh ... needless to say is pretty awesome. I can tell that i've lost inches and stuff too. Makes me excited. haha. I can't wait to see how things go if i keep this up by the end of March. I was planning on having lost 20 lbs by the end of march... but i've already lost half of that in one week! sooo who knows what'll happen. I figure i'll slow down here pretty soon, and i'll have to push through a (i can't spell this word, but this is how it sounds) platoe (haha), but i'll cross that bridge when i come to it.

My two cents.
We are under enormous pressure to look a certain way.
I just posted this also on National Eating Disorder Week thread, but thought you'd all might like to see this, it's a Dove.inc film , on Youtube. It says it all about "beauty"

check it out.
