Questions about belly button piercing

I had my belly button pierced almost a week ago. For the first few days it was fine, then the top became a little red, but I didn't worry about it. Now the top is horribly red, almost turning purple and it hurts a lot and is swollen. The guy who pierced it said to clean it with Band Aid brand Antiseptic 2-3 times a day, and I have. I've started using Peroxide on it as well, because I'm afraid it's infected. What else can I use on it, to get rid of the infection. Also, I'm a lifeguard and when I guard I have to wear a one piece bathing suit and I know that that aggrivates it, because it's putting pressure on it and not letting air circulate. And am I allowed to go swimming with it in yet?

Have you tryed saltwater? That helps to dry up everything, and help infection. I used it in my piercings, aswell.
You probably shouldn't go swimming just yet, especially with it being infected and it will just get worse with the bathingsuit putting pressure on it.
Tell me if saltwater works, i'll try and see what else could work!
(I love piercings, )
http://www.wcu.edu/studentd/hlthserv/bodypierce.html
Check out that site, it's loaded with information on infection, naval piercings, etc.
"Apply a salt solution (1/2 tsp. sea salt to one cup water) to the pierce for 3-4 minutes in order to soak off dried material that could cause internal damage. Clean the pierce with soap containing antibacterial agents."
Theres a tip for ya there.
Hopefully it heals and you no more problems with it.
Oh, and I found this too:
ClothingTight clothing rubbing against your piercing is not recommended—it disrupts blood flow and can delay healing. It also increases the chance of your jewelry ‘parking’ or folding to one side, especially with rings. Exercising Take care on hot days and when exercising as sweat tends to collect in your navel. Wash or soak the navel afterwards.
And heres the link to that site which has tonnss of great facts and tips to keep the piercing healthy and clean:

yeah, i head that sea salt by itself is good... like rub dry sea salt on it... i don't have a one, but i'm thinking my friend that had it done bought some kind of sea salt stuff for it... you may want to do a google search for that. (not sea salt, but belly button infections in general)

Stop reading my signature. Don't deny it. You're reading it. I can see you. You're giving it the casual little once-over. How rude. Didn't your mother teach you better?

Swimming Swimming is not prohibited while your piercing is healing, but you should only swim for short periods in pools that are thoroughly chlorine- or ozone-treated. Do not let your skin become wrinkly and soft. If you swim in the ocean or waterways, do not swim after heavy rain. Storm water run-off often contains bacteria and parasites.
There we go!!

If it's infected you should probably go to a doctor right away. They can mess up things you didn't think they would, like your lungs and stuff.

I had my bellybutton pierced a few years ago. I don't have any suggestions other than to follow what everyone else has said. I hope it works out, Tink!

The guy who did mine told me I shouldn't even bathe for a few weeks, and try to cover it up a little when showering. I was also told to use Antiseptics a couple of times a day, so that's good. I followed those orders and never had any problems with mine. I'm really just confused about the swimming part cause I was told I shouldn't do that, sorry that I can't help you any more, maybe you should stop by a piercing studio and ask them about it.

I've heard that you shouldn't take it out if it is infected because it can trap the infection inside your skin.
That website Fiona posted has some really good advice. I was going to get mine done before I went on holiday in July, but I'm going to wait until I get back now because of the swimming pool and it being really hot and sweaty. Seems like you have to be really careful about cleaning it.

This maybe a really random question. But for all you girls who have gotten your belly button pierced- Did it really hurt? I was thinking about getting mine done- but I am so scared it will get infected and such so I was just wondering how they pierced it and if it hurt.

I've heard its not as painful as a facial piercing.
Some say its horrible, some say they didn't mind it at all.
Heres a good piercing site. Actually the best piercing site in the world.
www.bmezine.com
It has everything you've ever wanted to know about piercings...it has thousand of pictures of every type of piercing, along with tattoos/mods/scarification/ and personal stories about ones piercing experience.

| Well, I can only say it DID hurt not enough to make me cry or anything but it wasn't very pleasant, I tell ya *lol* I'm a big baby when it comes to piercings though, I guess it hurts less than getting your tongue, lip or eyebrow pierced. I was quite lucky cause it never got infected. I never regretted it either, so if you want one I'd say go for it But maybe you should have your belly pierced once it gets colder outside. It's annoying during the summer as you can't go swimming for a couple of weeks.

That site is really good. This is a bit off topic, but does anyone actually know anyone who's had scarification? Seems a bit like a step too far for me!

 Thanks Taf!
