THE LOVELY BONES -- Peter Jackson's Next Film

I read this today about casting ideas for "The Lovely Bones."
Casting The Lovely Bones is the tougher call. Of any Jackson film it's the first in which actors will have a good chance of winning an Oscar. Ask anyone who has read the bestselling book by American Alice Sebold who they would like to play each character and everyone has a strong opinion.
Central to the story is 14-year-old Susie Salmon, who is raped and murdered and from heaven narrates the story of what happens to her killer, the police investigation, her friends and family.
For months there's been buzz on this. If any new actor gets the part she'll become an overnight sensation. Twelve-year-old American actress Dakota Fanning, best known for playing Tom Cruise's daughter in War of the Worlds, may be in the running. American style magazine W last year quoted Fanning's agent as saying she and 15-year-old American Carly Schroeder (Mean Creek) had auditioned for the part.
There were also rumours last year that unknown Kiwi actress Carolyn Dando had been cast, which was news to Dando's agent and Jackson.
Imagine Casting has Fanning ranked at No 15. At No 1 is Tiger Darrow – a Hollywood name if ever there was one – who has had small parts in several movies, including The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl last year. Darrow is American and 13, so out-ages Fanning for the part. And, as some people have remarked, Fanning always looks younger than her real age.
Sadly, Whale Rider star Keisha Castle-Hughes hasn't made the list – but you just never know. Jackson and Castle-Hughes seemed to get on well at the 2004 Oscars. Other names thrown about include Natalie Portman as the older Lindsey Salmon (Susie's sister) and Mortensen is at No 1 to play Susie's father Jack Salmon.
The biggest advantage in casting Mortensen is that he won't have to be shown where Wellington's best fish and chip shops and late-night cafes are located. When he was here for The Lord of the Rings he was in one just about every night.
Most unlikely casting wishes include Friends star Courteney Cox as Susie's mother Abigail Salmon, and either Adrien Brody, Kevin Spacey or Johnny Depp playing police detective Len Fenerman – though all three would do a great job.
Imagine Casting's most imaginative wish is this year's best actor Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman. He's at No 1 to play The Lovely Bones' killer Mr Harvey. Of all the characters in the book, it's the role that will have the biggest impact on movie audiences. Seymour Hoffman has just the right amount of gravitas and craziness to pull it off.
But then Serkis (who is to play Moors murderer Ian Brady) and Wood (in Sin City) know how to play creepy serial killers, so maybe Jackson will surprise everyone by re-imagining actors he has worked with before.
Whoever is cast in both films, expect the usual Wellington flurry of excitement during shooting. "Is that Philip Seymour Hoffman staring at the bucket fountain, or is Jack Black back in town, but he's dyed his hair red?"
"Honestly, it was Johnny Depp in front of me at New World and he was buying pineapple lumps!"
"And then this young girl demands a table at Logan Brown, and she had this huge entourage, and then they start calling her after the name of some American state."
"I'm not joking, it was Sean Connery. Yes, Sean Connery, and he was sipping a latte – shaken not stirred – at the Chocolate Fish again. Of course it was him! My wife's hairdresser swears she's heard he's in Halo!"

Thanks for the info I loved this book. Pete Jackson will do a great job with this. I loved his Heavenly Creatures and this will probably done in a similar style.
The casting choices seem strange, but Viggo would be great as the dad and Hoffman would make a good Mr. Harvey.

Cool - thanks for posting Yeux, I've been waiting to read some more info about this project.
I'm very curious about heaven too; Viggo would make a good dad in my opinion. Haha, imagine Elijah as the killer...

It's exciting to hear a little more about this movie, even though it won't be made for quite a while.
I just can't see Dakota Fanning as Susie at all. She looks too young. Viggo would be great as the dad, and Philip Seymour Hoffman could do the killer very well.
I'm curious, too, to see how heaven is envisioned by Peter. It's going to be very interesting.

@Joanie, oh yes I can understand how this section would be hard to read when you have a child that age, and even if you don't, it's rather disturbing too. I hope this time round will be better for you.
I also agree with everyone about Dakota, she doesn't seem right for the part, and I'm sure PJ will see that too.

no no no no! wont work either.. the sister is older i believe and she has a boyfriend.. if i remember correctly they go off to camp or something like that.. anyway, she loses her virginity.. don't need to have dakota doing that.

Wow, that sounds great the P.J. is making this movie. I read this book last summer, and thought it was great. I will differently see the movie.

I just don't want to see Elijah portray another killer, sorry, although I'm sure he can do it brilliantly.
Almost every character of his teaches me things, stays with me for a long time and is some kind of inspiration for me. I hate violence and I doubt I could fall for a killer, even portrayed by Elijah...
