I can’t answer that simply because I don’t know most actresses especially the foreign ones. The book didn’t really describe the student’s physical appearance but judging from the women’s comments and reactions to him, I got the impression that he was Quite the flirtatious type. I could picture a sultry, athletic-looking woman (who of course couldn’t be too tall) playing the role; I actually think a blonde woman would look good next to someone of Elijah’s coloring.
I think Elijah is going to have to come up with something of an athletic physic to pull this off because the role sounds very physical to me.
And you’re right; the story was so short that the writers and director have a lot to play with so it will be interesting to see how they develop it. I also could see Ian M playing the professor, as he is good in that humorous/mentoring role.

I just finished the book and have been thinking about that as well. I think Kate Winslet would be good, she's British and a very good actress.

Her part is pretty significant. I can't imagine them cutting it out.
I agree also that Kate Winslet would be a good choice.

thanks nuke and cristiel for answering my question the other day about more on the plot.  i've read a bit of what chuckie said about the student's physical appearance.

do you think it would matter about his appearance, and do you think they will somehow, not so much focus, but bring that part in about him? is there some kind of struggling that goes on where he would have to show this kind of trait? we know he can pull that off looking at GSH. 
i did find a bit of info on the filming locations for those who want get a glimpse at him in england. 
Filming, directed by Alex de la Iglesia, will take place at various locations across the city, including the Sheldonian Theatre and the Radcliffe Camera, in March.

Actually no, there are no fight scenes and the student is not required to do anything more physical than walk a lot and play tennis; I just picture someone athletic-looking, maybe with some muscle tone but the character is not described that way. Elijah should do fine and they way things go, they may even change the sport for the movie.

this article explains a few other things that may be of interest, especially if you're going to buy the book.
thanks for your explanation chuckie. i suppose people will have some kind of idea of what the characters would look like.

Imdb mentions a Spanish actress called Leonor Watling who will be in the movie. They don't mention the role she's going to play but I wouldn't be surprised if she'd be Elijah's girlfriend.
