It is not good at all that he is limited as such a character. but...many ppl want only his too strange role? Should he be weird hobbit through all eternity? Does it come from his hobbit impression? Just because he does a film or two that is not considered "independent" does not mean that he can't continue doing independent films. As far as this being a bad career move, no one will know until the movie is finished.  This is why even the best actors have a few (or many) flops.
