The plot sounds interesting - Robert Kennedy was a fascinating person and building a movie around his last hours, the Ambassador hotel and the (imaginary) characters could work very well.
And it would be the first time Lijah plays a husband.....

Thanks to Bunnie for pointing this out in her LJ...
Elijah Wood Meets 'Bobby' By Brad Brevet Source: RopeofSilicon | August 30, 2005
Back on August 25th, The Hollywood Reporter let us all know that Emilio Estevez was not done with the film world as his passion project, Bobby, was not going to be abandoned. The article let us know that Estevez had Anthony Hopkins and Demi Moore lined up for his feature on Robert F. Kennedy and now a bit more casting has fallen into our lap.
While doing his press tour for Everything is Illuminated I had a chance to sit down for about an hour with Elijah Wood here in Seattle and believe it or not there was more to talk about than Starbucks coffee. While I am still putting together the rest of the interview, which will cover everything from Illuminated to Elijah's passion for music I felt this tidbit was too good to wait.
Wood told me that he is up for a part in Estevez's Bobby and went rather in-depth with the storyline, check out what he had to say below, but be warned there are a few spoilers as far as storyline goes, nothing major, but I would hate for anyone to be upset by it.
WARNING: SPOILERS!
Quote:Elijah: There's a couple of things kinda on the horizon, nothing's properly set up yet.
Q: Anything you can talk about?
There may be a music biography coming up, something that scares the shit out of me. It's someone I am extremely passionate about, and yeah... That's coming up, but that's way in the future. [Iggy Pop?]
There's actually a movie that I am pretty sure will happen called Bobby, it's kind of just starting. Emilio Estevez wrote a script based on the day that Bobby Kennedy was shot at the Ambassador Hotel and it's basically this really fantastic ensemble cross-section of people from all walks of life at the Ambassador Hotel on the day that he comes to give his speech and was shot, just a fantastic script. Great homage to the hotel, to that time and obviously to that man and kind of what happens to these characters as a result of that happening, and it ends with his speech, it's really extraordinary.
Q: Did Emilio approach you for this role specifically?
Elijah: Yeah.
Q: What will your role in the film be?
Elijah: Well, it's a man who is marrying a woman who is actually in love with his brother, but he is marrying this woman just so that he can avoid the draft during Vietnam and he ends up falling in love with her, and they end up falling in love with each other.
It's like a tiny little snippet of life, I mean all of these stories don't really relate to a greater picture, it's just these snippets of life at that time in America, in the Ambassador Hotel.
Q: And the script is just phenomenal?
Elijah: It's really, really excellent. It's an ambitious script, I mean it's a huge cross-section, it goes down to the wait staff and what's going on with them, and he gets it from all sort of classes, it's really interesting. The people that manage the hotel and what they're going through leading up to this speech, and then he gives the speech and was shot and then the aftermath and it ends with the speech kind of trailing off.
And it's really interesting because the speech is incredibly poignant for today's world, extremely relevant, I mean it was relevant than, there was obviously social and political strife then too. It was during Vietnam, coming out of the Civil Rights Movement and it was like two or three days previous that Martin Luther King had been shot, but the speech definitely echoes a lot of that, and it is all about us as Americans and as people across the world who need to stand together and to unite our visions and we can overcome this stage.
I mean, I was reading that speech and I was like... f*ck, we need to hear this kinda shit now! So, I actually think it could be a really important film to illuminate an American perspective and an American ideal that doesn't really exist anymore... very interesting. |
As for the speech itself, I have scoured Google looking for it and all I can find is that it was a "rousing victory speech," which doesn't help us much, if someone has it or knows where I can find it to share with our readers please shoot me an email.

Any history buffs out there who can help this guy out?
Not the first time, Sabine. Remember Ash Wednesday? ...and he did get married in Deep Impact.
Thanks, Solskie. I didn't care to look in here and didn't know that Sabine already posted the link.

Elijah Wood Joins Emilio Estevez's Robert Kennedy Project

Elijah Wood Joins Emilio Estevez's Robert Kennedy Project 'Lord of the Rings' actor to star alongside Anthony Hopkins, possibly Demi Moore in 'Bobby.' Elijah Wood's trademark blue eyes have glimpsed the wonders of Middle Earth (the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy), the destructive power of the universe ("Deep Impact") and the graphic manifestation of a comic book come to life ("Sin City"). Next he'll be focusing them on one of the most tragically memorable events in the history of U.S. politics.
"It's a film called 'Bobby,' " Wood revealed of the project. "It's about the day that Robert Kennedy was shot at the Ambassador Hotel, and it takes place at the Ambassador. It's essentially about a cross-section of various people from all walks of life, at that hotel on that day, all leading up to his speech and him being assassinated."
The former Frodo Baggins will join the previously cast Anthony Hopkins and possibly Demi Moore, who's in negotiations. With writer/director/star Emilio Estevez hoping to shoot the film before the historic Los Angeles hotel is demolished later this year, production is expected to commence on location at the beginning of October.
Much along the lines of historical blockbuster "Titanic," Estevez's passion project portrays a collection of fictionalized characters whose lives intersect during one of the most shocking events of the 20th century. U.S. Senator Kennedy, who was assassinated in 1968 a mere five years after his brother, was largely considered to be the frontrunner for the presidency himself.
"I'll play a character who is getting married to a woman to avoid the draft," Wood said of his part, adding that his character will portray one of 22 people present that night at the Ambassador. "Ultimately they fall in love with each other, but at first it's only out of practicality."
Hopkins is slated to play the hotel's doorman, while Moore is considering the role of a lounge singer. More casting announcements are anticipated over the next several weeks.
The 24-year-old Wood will also be seen this fall in the dramas "Everything Is Illuminated" and "Green Street Hooligans."

And here...
Emilio Estevez's "Bobby" is Gearing Up
Aug 26 2005
Demi Moore May Join Anthony Hopkins in "Bobby" Emilio Estevez is no longer alone with "Bobby." Anthony Hopkins has been cast as a hotel doorman and Demi Moore (a fellow '80s bratpack member of Estevez's) is in talks to play a lounge singer in the film which examines the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy. Estevez recently told The Hollywood Reporter, "The film is about being at critical mass -- critical mass in relationships or between race, and the hotel and the characters under its roof serve as a microcosm for what was happening in the country during that time."
"Bobby" will focus the hours leading up to Robert F Kennedy's assassination at the Los Angeles Ambassador Hotel on June 4th, 1968. Estevez wrote the script and will direct, produce, and co-star in the film.
Filming is expected to begin in October 2005.

Here's the IMDB listing...
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0308055
I already asked IMDb to include Elijah's name in the Cast list.
Still more news...
Anthony Hopkins, Demi Moore targeting Kennedy Thu Aug 25, 5:28 AM ET LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Anthony Hopkins is set to star in "Bobby," Emilio Estevez's passion project about the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy. Demi Moore is in negotiations to join the cast.
Part fact and part fiction, the ensemble film chronicles the intertwining lives of a grand cast of characters, all of whom are present at Los Angeles' Ambassador Hotel in the hours leading up to Kennedy's assassination. Hopkins will be the hotel's doorman, and Moore will portray a lounge singer.
The movie hopes to touch upon racial stereotypes, class differences and sexual inequality in its story lines.
"My intention with 'Bobby' is not to make a political picture, although the 1968 California primary figures prominently in the story," Estevez said. "The film is about being at critical mass -- critical mass in relationships or between race, and the hotel and the characters under its roof serve as a microcosm for what was happening in the country during that time. The entire country was experiencing critical mass. Culturally, we all unraveled after that tragic night on June 5. And now, 37 years later, our country has reached critical mass once again."
An October 25 start date is being eyed, with a budget of less than $10 million.
With the real Ambassador now closed for demolition, the production hopes to re-create the historic hotel on soundstages and possibly use the Biltmore Hotel as a location.
The castings see Hopkins reuniting with Estevez, with whom he worked on 1992's "Freejack." Moore and Estevez, longtime friends and members of the '80s Brat Pack, acted together in 1985's "St. Elmo's Fire" and 1986's "Wisdom." Estevez wrote and directed the latter.
