I heard that too. I never knew dolphins were suicidal.
Flipper is a funny movie. I used to watch it all the time when it first came out, and then several times in 2002. But I haven't seen it since (2002). I could go rent it, but I've seen it so many times, I might as well just watch it in my head.

Thats sad that the dolphin was treated so badly that it resorted to suicide. *shakes head*
I have also seen it many times. So many times, in fact, that I can quote a lot of the movie. How sad is that. Lol.

Well, dolphins are very very intelligent so they are very emotional and sensitive as well.

I know.
I would have gladly taken care of it. I love dolphins. But, i would have had no place for it.

Some people have no common sense at all! A similar thing happened with the Orca in Free Willy as well as far as I remember, I'm not sure if he died but he wasn't happy!
The sights and pleasures of the island, including a pretty neighbor named Kim (Jessica Wesson), aren't enough to shake off Sandy's gloomy outlook. But when he meets Flipper while boating with Porter, his morale improves considerably, then gets another boost when Flipper develops a loyal attachment to him.
A bit weird isn't it? I have no objections though!
I love dolphins too!! Always have, I even have a 2005 dolphin calendar But without topless Elijah
I tried to find a newsstory on the Dolphin Suicide but I couldn't find anything.

I have a 2005 dolphin calander also! i wonder if we have the same one. Dolphins are great animals, and they seem like very good friends, even if they can't talk. I would love to work with them someday.

We might well have the same calendar "hopeinspiresaction"
I saw a program about Dolphins on the Discovery Channel yesterday. The program was called Dolphinmania. Remember the orginal TV Series Flipper? Well, in this program yesterday, the creator of Flipper the TV Series spoke about his work with the dolphins. He said that ever since his series, people have been obsessed with Dolphins and a lot of them have wanted to capture them and use them for shows and such because there is such a big demand. According to him, the reason why these dolphins, which are not made to live in captivity, are still hunted so much is because people buy the tickets to themeparks and such.
He said that he feels guilty because his show started this trend and now he works actively together with other people to try and rectify some of the damage his show did by caring for dolphins that have been captured and if possible training them to be released into the wild.
He said that "Flipper" in his series was played by 5 dolphins. He told the story of how one dolphin (maybe it was the last out of the 5 I'm not sure right now) killed herself. He said that for Dolphins every breath they take is a conscious effort, so they have the ability to simply stop breathing. He said he was holding the dolphin in his arms and realised that she stopped breathing and she sank to the bottom of the tank. This experience is one of the reasons why he is now actively working towards helping the dolphins.
I thought that was a very interesting program and I appreciated the fact that the Series' creator took some responsibility, I'm sure he can't be blamed alone but at least he is doing something to help the dolphins which is great.
By the way, I posted an Elijah interview in my Livejournal which I only discovered recently while I was looking through some old magazines of mine. In it Elijah talks about Flipper among other things.
You can find the interview here
