Hubby and I have been reading "the HOBBIT" for about a month together now and I have just imagined some of the scenes that PJ could do so well. One being them in the barrels (the dwarves) with the elves on top of them. We were discussing how that could be done. Maybe CG combined with close up of the actors........ awe but who would play the young Bilbo?? I pictured actually Dom.

What about the scenes with Smaug the dragon, they would be cool scenes to film too!
Yes, I myself wonder who would play Bilbo maybe Peter will choose someone new for the role..
Certainly Ian Mckellen can play Gandalf and maybe John Rhys Davis can play Gloin..
This is a good topic f.r.o.d.o

If they ever make "The Hobbit" I think they have to either use the same actors for the same roles or someone totally new.
I know a lot of people would love to see Elijah play Bilbo but I just hate that idea. Same goes for Dom. Dom will always be Merry. And since Ian Holm is too old to play Bilbo, I hope they get someone who has nothing to do with the LOTR films. For me, that's the only way to make the characters believable.

I've said it before and I'll say it again Martin Freeman could play Young Bilbo.

Do you think Sean Astin could play Bilbo or Billy Boyd, they are older than Elijah and Dom, good news anyway I found out while in NZ that 'the hobbit' is definitly getting made by PJ

The elves weren't actually on top of the barrels were they? But it was a great part in the book. In any case I would want to see all the major scenes from the book incorporated into the movie. After the LOTR, the Hobbit should be a piece of cake for PJ. I think all the parts could be played by real actors as well and it would also be neat to see Andy Serkis play gollum in the flesh, not CG.
I know nothings been finalized at all but it’s nice to actually discuss this as if it will happen.

I haven't read the Hobbit in years, and it was never one of my favourites but I think its a shame Ian Holm would be too old to play Bilbo. Victoria - I like that suggestion of Martin Freeman!

Why hasn't it been all over the press then?
I'm sorry but I don't find the word of a tour guide reliable. As long as both New Line and Peter do not confirm anything officially in the press, I'm not believing any of it.
Also, Peter is about to start filming "The Lovely Bones", after that he's making "Tintin" with Spielberg. There's no way he could start filming "The Hobbit" in 2009. There's not even a script yet!

This tour guide was actually part of the security on the first film on the hobbiton set so he has inside connections..so fingers crossed its true, it'll be great, can't wait to see it
just been on imdb to check progress on the film, here is what I found
"There are now, however, signs that PJ and New Line are on speaking terms again. Ian McKellan said 19th July 2007 "I detect that there is movement and it's movement in the right direction. I'll be seeing Peter (Jackson) when we tour (New Zealand) next month. I hope it will happen."
"When asked if it was true that company insiders had been in talks with Jackson's reps, Shaye replied, "Yes, that's a fair statement. Notwithstanding our personal quarrels, I really respect and admire Peter and would love for him to be creatively involved in some way in 'The Hobbit.' -"

Oh, yes of course
I don't believe it as long as it's not been officially announced. And I'm sure that they are not going to wait for weeks when there has been an agreement.
And yes, they are talking, I haven't said that they are not. Everyone knows there has been a settlement between Peter and New Line.

found some more talking of it on imdb
"Telegraph.co.uk recently ran this small article, which should be taken with a large grain of salt: Sir Ian McKellen's dream of reprising the role of Gandalf - the role that turned the stage actor into an international film star - looks like being realised after all. Last year, it had looked a distinctly forlorn hope after Sir Ian's friend Peter Jackson, the director of the The Lord of the Rings trilogy, said he wanted nothing to do with turning Tolkien's other great work, The Hobbit, into a film after a row about money with the production company New Line Cinema. Now, however, Jackson appears to have patched things up with New Line's founder, Bob Shaye, and the film looks back on course.
By a happy coincidence, Sir Ian is currently in New Zealand performing in King Lear and plans to dine with New Line's bosses shortly when he will make it clear how keen he is to play Gandalf in the new film.
http://www.theonering.net/index.shtml "
I was in NZ when Ian Mckellen was never saw him though cos didnt find out till we went to Rotorua, he was in Wellington.
"They will probably try to mimic the LOTR releases and set them for Christmas 2009, 2010, 2011. So plenty of time.
The three dates I’m referring too are for a 2 part Hobbit along with the mysterious 3rd film that is apparently part of the deal. Some say it will be a fill-in from the Hobbit until the start of FOTR taken from the Silmarillion or the unfinished tales."
Now that would be interesting release it in 3 parts one being mysterious film..hmm..
