Sean Astin in "Borderland"

This is thread in which to discuss Sean Astin's coming appearance in the movie, Borderland. This is a true story about a human sacrifice cult in Mexico. Not Sean's usual fare, you say? Certainly not, and that probably exactly why he took it. He's getting rave reviews for this movie which will be released September 28th.
Some comments are ...
"A disconcertingly vicious performance by Sean Astin" — Scott Weinberg, Cinematical
Here's the website for the movie. There was a trailer there but it seems to be missing now.
There is one here.

He's in one of the,, but I haven't seen this one so I'm not sure. He's TOTALLY creepy, at least in the one I saw.
The reviews all say that Sean's performance is the reason to see the film. They say he gives the bloodthirsty Randall a certain humanity and even affability while still being creepy.
This is a real demonstration of Sean's range and while it ISN'T the kind of movie I enjoy, I WILL enjoy seeing Sean make magic, villianous magic, but magic nontheless.
Hugs, Rach

Thanks so much for the link Rach. This sounds good...I love true crime stories (if they're well done). I'm going to see if there's a book out on the incident that they refer to.

I did a little research at work today and located some information about the real story Borderland is based upon; the movie is described as being loosely based on an incident that occurred in a Mexico/Texas border town in 1989, Matamoros, Mexico, just across the border from Texas. I am a true crime buff and have dozens of books of this sort, In Cold Blood, Helter Skelter, Fatal Vision (Jeffrey McDonald), The Stranger Beside Me (Ted Bundy), Richard Speck etc...The ones I enjoy are very well written and read like a detective novel. I find the investigatory aspects of these cases fascinating, not the gruesome details of the crime. A lot of the good books don't dwell on that sort of thing anyway. Borderland is about three Texas college students on spring break who run into a cult-like group that practice Voodoo worship; the story deals with what happened to one of the victims in particular, Mark Kilroy
The victim’s father wrote one book:
Sacrifice: The Tragic Cult Murder of Mark Kilroy in Matamoros : A Fathers Determination to Turn Evil into Good (Hardcover) by Jim Kilroy (Author), Bob Stewart
There is another book The Resistance Manifesto by John Conner that mentions the cult leader Serafin Hernandez Garcia ( in the chapter on Human Sacrifices).
Amazon states there are several books on Kilroy and I ran across a lot of articles about Serefin as well. I plan to look them up and probably buy only one. Hopefully the movie won't be as gruesome as it sounds.

Thanks for all the info, Romeny! You do good work!
I have a feeling it MAY be as gruesome as it sounds. That's why it's going to be so difficult for me to watch.
Oh, the things I do for Sean.... *shakes head sadly
Hugs, Rach

I really hope it's tastefully done otherwise I know I won't be able to watch it; I love scary movies but hate blood and gore.
It sounds like an great turn for Sean though; it's exciting to read the positive things that are being written about his role in this.

I plan to smuggle a plastic bag in my tote bag. I fully admit to having the world's weakest stomach. It's a good thing I didn't go into anything medical.

I LOVE the idea of Sean playing a chilling and creepy character but I don't think i'll be able to watch this if it is very bloody and gory, I hate gore.

It has a distributor. In fact, it has been showing in preview screenings around the country. Belleferret from ljland has seen it and thought Sean was wonderful, even though, like me, this is NOT her kind of film.LOL
The wider release of the film has been delayed because the studio that made it was sold and things are still being settled. I will probably see it on DVD. I'll watch it with my hubby who LOVES blood and gore. He can tell me when I can open my eyes. LOL
EDIT: Apparently, it was released November 9th. It hasn't come here but then NOTHING comes here so that isnt saying much.

What! I'll look in the movie section of the paper, I never even looked for it. I have to admit I wasn't certain I would even try to see it though due to the gore content.
