Books or Films

Hello
On this I will chose films mainly because I saw the films before I read the books. And I think for people who don't know the story the films are easier to help them understand. Plus they were adapted really well from book to screen.

I've voted for the books. I really love the movies but I still prefer the books. There's so much more background in the books, so much more room for imagination, so much more history. And there's no thing the movies don't have and that's Tolkien himself. I've been reading his books since I was 12 and there's just no one who can tell stories like he could.

Personally, I couldn;t decide. The books are a work of geius. having read all 3 before I saw the films, I don't think they;re that hard to understand. plus there are loads of great bits in the books that you don;t get in the films - like that bit in the Prancing Pony where Frodo danced on the table. However, the films deserve a mention too - I hold Peter jackson in the highest esteem for planning the whole thing so well and making them so magical and poignant - the cast bring the whole thing to life and did anyone ever see the cartton LOTR made in the 70s, I think by a man called ralph bakshir? I'll check that name, but it was terrible and it goes to show what an amazing job PJ did and for that reason I love the films as much as the books.
has anyone read that book by david Corbett that talks about LOTR? He mentions a very valid point that the films show the story on a basic level and don;t fully communicate the deeper ideas that the books do. however, he also mentions that for fans of the book, that doesn;t matter as hey fill in the gaps themselves.

The books have inspired PJ to make the films and inspired me with the story. At first I balked at even going to the films. I knew that the film medium only captures a small portion of the boosk and LOTR was no exception. But PJ did the best job anyone could have done. Yep JRR Tolkien can really weave a great TALE

I voted for the books as my favorites...because the details are so lovely and the movie sort of changes sections and characters in a way that some of the impact is lost.
Now don't get me wrong...I LOVVVVEEEE the movies and think PJ did the absolute best job writing and directing the screenplay! It was obvious that he loved the books too!
But the books....ahhhhhh....they are just a sample of awesome writing ability.

I really need to re read the books as when I read them I got bored and skipped through ttt and rotk parts, I find it hard to stay interested when reading. Although I read all of fotr part and the hobbit with ease.

I totally understand, Elizabeth! I was very fortunate...the Hobbit and LOTR was first read to me by an enthausiastic teacher in 4th grade. So I feel in love with it without actually reading it. Then I actually read it in 6th grade...and it was a little tough to get through some parts...but I found as I have gotten older with a greater appreciation for the books....I LOVE all those details...and even read the appendices. Yes, it is safe to say I am a total LOTR geek now. Each time I read it...some new detail hits me.

I'm sorry, but the books bore me to tears. I much prefer the movies.

No need to dodge any flying tomatoes, Aisling. I would never throw any at you....I would only be tempted to throw some at my brothers! Hee hee!
And besides...the movies were great!

I guess the books are special in their own way as each individual can imagine the imagery as they read.
The films are good because they give people a chance to see all of the story coming to live with real actors..
I voted for both..

I meant it as a joke, since most of the others were going on about how they loved the books. I know you wouldn't really throw tomatoes.
Marshmallows, maybe...
