Hi,
I have found this for you
The British honours system is a means of rewarding individuals' personal bravery, achievement, or service to the United Kingdom. The system consists of three types of award: honours, decorations and medals:
* Honours are used to recognise merit in terms of achievement and service; * Decorations tend to be used to recognise specific deeds; * Medals are used to recognise bravery, long and/or valuable service and/or good conduct.
All for you to read here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_honours_system

Ian Holm, like Ian McKellen is a 'Sir'. So it's Sir Gandalf and Sir Bilbo

I was quite surprise when I found out Ian Holm was a Sir, because he's not referred to as Sir Ian Holm, whereas Ian McKellen is always referred to as Sir Ian McKellen
