Hey I was just wondering if someone really knows why Elijah spoke with an English accent in The Lord of the Rings movies... Was it because Peter Jackson wanted it or what?

this is a very odd question.

i guess you didn't know that the characters in the books are english, therefore, elijah had an accent.

Yes, I did know that, but I think it's weird because not all the actors speak English in LotR.

Hobbits are considered as "little british people" by the fans - Tolkien was sad that no purely ancient epic was left of about british culture, so he wanted to make an epic-like story about british people. Hobbits and rohirrim are both british-like people in LotR.

So I'm not really surprised that they hired accent trainers to teach british pronouncing. The accent was west midland by he way.

Well, considering that they had people that played Hobbits from all over the world with different accents, they probably had to choose one that they could all do well and at least sound the same.

For instance, Dom M and Lij both sound totally different in real life. But, in LOTR, they sounded more like they came from the same area.

Anyone understand what I am saying?? lol

not so weird. we know pete was on the lookout for someone to play frodo for a long time. he looked at hundreds of english actors to play the part. he was never satisfied until he got elijah's audition tape. it was more about who could do the job. it was the talent and look of elijah that caught pete's eye and lij was the one to bring pete's vision to life.

i think pete made a wise decision.

Yes, Peter was very smart when he chose Elijah But why didn't Sean Astin speak English as well? He was also playing a Hobbit

I love English accent, I think Lij did a good job playing Frodo. Lij really sounds English. My boyfriend who didn't know who Lij was, though Lij was British and not American.
