I would really want to know what the names of the characters of LotR are in other languages.
Don't ask me why I wanna know that, 'cause I don't the answer 
OK, I can already tell what the dutch names are.
Lord of the Rings = In de ban van de Ring
FotR = Het Reisgenootschap
TTT = De twee Torens
RotK = De terugkeer van de Koning
Frodo Baggins = Frodo Balings
Samwise Gamgee = Sam Gewissies
Pippin Took = Pepijn Toek
Merry = Merijn Brandebok
Bilbo Baggins = Bilbo Balings
Gollum = Gollem
Sting = Prik
The Shire = De Gouw
All the other names are the same.
I may forgot one, then just ask!!!!

FotR = Die Gefährten
TTT = Die Zwei Türme
RotK = Die Rückkehr des Königs
Frodo Baggins = Frodo Beutlin
Samwise Gamgee = Samwise Gamdschie
Pippin Took = Pippin Tuk
Merry = Merry Brandybock
Bilbo Baggins = Bilbo Beutlin
Gollum = Gollum
Sting = Stich
The Shire = Das Auenland

Here you have the Slovene names. Does anyone even know where Slovenia is?

Sam: Samoglav Gamgi
Pippin: Peregrin Tuk
Merry: Medo
Bilbo Baggins: Bilbo Bisagin
Gollum: Golum
Sting: Želo
The Shire: Šajerska
*You might have noticed that The Two Towers are represented only by ONE word in Slovene - it's because we don't have articles (like A/AN/THE) and because we also have DUAL (besides singular and plural). Dual is the form of the noun for TWO things/persons/etc., while plural is used for THREE or MORE persons/things/etc. That is why we don't have to use the numeral TWO - the duality is already expressed in the suffix of the noun STOLPA.

It struck me the first time I watched the DVD in the original language: english. For almost 20 years I believed the names are the same no matter which language. But here is the one that really confused me:

Why did they change the name?

Lord of the Rings = Stapanul inelelor
FotR = Fratzia inelului
TTT = cele Doua Turnuri
RotK = Intoarcerea Regelui
Frodo Baggins = luckily, same as in English The main names were all kept.
Samwise Gamgee = same
Pippin Took = same
Merry = same
Gollum = Gollum
Sting = Sting
The Shire = Comitatul
Shelob = same
Treebeard = Arborebarbos
Rivendell = Valceaua Despicata
Strider = Pas mare
Bag-end = Fundatura
Here in Romania they show the movies in the original language, and subtitles are used to translate them... which is great, because I feel much would be lost through doubling. The original voice and interpretation of an actor plays a major part in the 'construction' of a character..
