I have mixed feelings about this. I mean, if Peter and Fran want to do it, then they should, in their own creative time. I just don't think they should be pushed into it by a corporation. Great art, such as LOTR doesn't come from money pushes that decided to fund or not fund a movie.
Also, i remember reading a while back that Ian McKellian (sp, sorry) said he would not do a movie version of The Hobbit, but rather a made for TV version. Of course, I can't remember exaclty if it was Ian or Pete that made that stipulation. Either way, a made for TV version would NEVR stand up to LOTR because it wouldn't get the same funding and the digital effects would fall short.
I guess this petiton makes me think that there a lot of people, including me, who are sad to see that the time of the LOTR triliogy is over, and they would like something as magical and wonderful to look forawrd to again. I just don't know if pressuring a Director and a talented team of artists to recreate a movie experience is logical or practical. I don't think I would want it that way. What I see is a big chance of a lot of people being dissappointed because it isn't as great as the triliogy and in turn, the triliogy and Pete and the team are tarnished. Maybe this is a pesimistic outlook, but I'd rather that be preserved. I'd rather that memory stay the same.
Ho hum...I still don't know if I am going to sign it. I'm not saying all this to create hype or stir people up. I just thought I'd share my thoughts.
Best, -BB

I really hope they let it happen. Good casting will be to have Ian McKellan as Gandalf and Elijah OR Ian Holm as Frodo.

I totally think that this idea should become a reality. It is such an exciting thing to see the Lord of the Rings books made into films, so now all we need to do is to make the Hobbit into a film. It totally deserves it.It is a great book and would love to see it made into a film. I am totally signing this petition, thing. Totally. I'll quit rambling now. Bye!

Quote from: Billin on May 31, 2004, 02:00:26 pm Yeah, that's what I was talking about. I'm positive it wouldn't be as good on a mini series, it just seems it would loose it's luster; i'm not ready for that shine to fade.
Ugg, I'm so torn. I still don't think it would be good on tv, and I still think a movie version would be dissappointing to a lot of fans because it will be so far from the triligy (new technology, less money?, a whole new cast.)
If they can't get the two Ians to come back, I don't think there is much point in it. The fan base would be lessened. Uggg...
I don't mean to sound like a pooper, just what I think the reality of it may be.

I understand totally where you're coming from, BB. If they did the miniseries, a lot more detail could be put into them, but you would lose that movie magic. If they did a movie, some of the detail might be lost. It's kind of a lose-lose situation, as far as the details of the story are concerned.
But I still want to see it made. Only if PJ makes it, of course.
Ian McKellen said if PJ did it, he'd totally be on for the Hobbit. So in that respect, it'd be worth it. And Andy would undoubtedly be back as Gollum. As far Ian Holm as Biblo though.. hmm. Not sure if they could make him young enough, you know?
The Hobbit is so different from LotR though.. I personally don't think any of the LotR fanbase would be lost, simply because the Hobbit is just another work of Tolkiens, and would be another work of Peter Jackson's, as well - an exceptionally good combination. And being that the Hobbit is so different, who knows! Maybe a whole new fanbase would spring up.
But I guess we'll never know unless it happens.
