SMOKING.
Nowadays, a lot of people think that it's a normal thing. Just like sleeping, drinking tea or sometimes even like breathing. They don't realize cigarettes damage health. Or maybe they don't want?
I know that some A&F members smoke. I feel sorry for Them. I feel sorry for all persons, who smoke. And one of them is Elijah.
Mr. Wood has smoked for 12 years. Do You realize, what does it means? For 12 years He has destroyed Himself. He has destroyed His organism. And all because of Josh Hartnett 
As You know, smoking can cause lung cancer and also many others cancers and illnesses. Usual cigaratte contains more than 4000 chemical compounds. At lest 400 of them are toxic.
For example, each year about 443600 people in the USA die from as a result of smoking. Cigarettes kill more persons in America than car accidents, alcohol, illegal drugs combined and even AIDS!
And did You know, that each cigarette shortens a smoker's life by approximately 11 minutes? It's horrible 
But if Elijah stoped smoking now, He would save His health! Someone could say that I wanna interfere in His life. But I'd do everything, what He told me to do. And there's nothing more precious for me, than His good.
I know, that He really WANTS to quite smoking. He has tried. He didn't succeed.WHY? Because it's hard to do it without OTHERS FURTHERANCE, which gives power. And He hasn't got it. Even His mother smokes, His sister smokes, so how? There is no one, who would see through Him. No one in His social milieu.
But WE CAN HELP HIM!  If we only unite and show Him our furtherance (I will conceive, how), He will be able to beat the habit! And that's the reason, why I'm writting this message.
I wrote it all because I hope that maybe it'll work. Once I've promised myself I would help Elijah, if I only could. And now perhaps I'll haven't got pangs of concience, because I did anything in this case (before I've had). I know although I tried. I simply had to get it off my chest.
But I can do nothing more alone. So, my Dear Friends...
Now, everything is up to You.

If he listens to the members of A&F, he may just quit! He has to.

This thread wouldn't be balanced if there wasn't a voice speaking AGAINST that plan, i.e. ME !
I can understand that you all are concerned about Elijah's health. But would you have forbidden James Dean to drive fast cars ?
I am a non-smoker myself. I've just never started, so I never could develop a habit - I took the easy way out.
I've lived for 21 years in a smoking household, and came back to it any time I was visiting my former home : my mother had been a chain smoker for decades of her life / the major part of her life. She finally quit about 10, 15 years ago, when she had to reduce her daily cigarette intake during a stint in hospital for, I think, a hip replacement operation. When she came home from hospital, she tried to make do without cigarettes - - - and it worked. This year, she will celebrate her 80th birthday, and she has never had any lung-related illnesses.
I am not saying smoking is healthy. It is bad for your health, everybody knows that. I am just saying we are not entitled to force any person to quit. It is their own decision. They have to find it in themselves, the decision and the will to quit. It is nobody's business apart from their own.
Until they decide to try to quit smoking, smoking is a part of their life we have to accept.
If Elijah liked, say, eating rhubarb more than anything else, and would consume rhubarb in unhealthy doses (rhubarb, consumed in large amounts, is bad for your calcium intake / your bones and could lead to developing kidney stones), would we approach him that he HAS to stop eating rhubarb in these large amounts, because we fear for his health ? No, we wouldn't, because the likes and dislikes of a person are part of his personality, and if eating rhubarb would give him pleasure / joy, who are we to deny him this pleasure ?
Elijah's smoking is part of his personality. It calms him down, when he needs it, it gives him time to think and it relaxes him (says a non-smoker !) - so I am okay with him smoking, and I will be okay with it, if he may be deciding one day to quit smoking.
But until that day : leave him be. It's none of our business. Who are we ? His family ? His well-meaning relatives and friends ?
No, we are complete strangers to him. And we don't have any right to go preaching about his smoking. It's as if we would invade the house he is living in and be saying : this part of furniture will have to go, it's a potential hazard because it could break down. - Not our business.
And can I just say I am a bit uncomfortable with writing pronouns referring to Elijah in capital letters ? I thought, in the English language (and I am no native English-speaker myself) this was reserved for God(s) ?
Elijah is no God - he is a human being just like the rest of us. And if you see your neighbour smoking all the time, would you approach him and tell him he has to stop smoking ? Well, I for one wouldn't.
These are just my two cents. One opinion among hundreds of opinions concerning Elijah's smoking expressed by his fans. I don't expect my opinion to have any weight. But I had to express it, to make my opinion heard.

EDITED TO ADD : Please ignore the paragraph about the pronouns starting with capital letters - re-reading your entry, Perceivel, I see that you are writing EVERY pronoun in capital letters, even pronouns like 'you' or 'they', NOT just pronouns referring to Elijah.

Thanks for Your message...and I'm sorry I really didn't want to offend You. I respect Your opinion. But I wanna explain, that...
1. I don't PROHIBIT Elijah to smoke. And we are concerned about Elijah's health, because He is our hero! We all love Him, so He's very important for us.
2. Your mother...I'm glad She feels good I didn't say that smoking MUST, but CAN cause lung cancer. Anyway, it's better not to risk own health.
And maybe She hasn't had any long-related illnesses, because She finally quit?
3. Rhubarb....very interesting example But it's not so much dangerous as cigarettes. Ok, not important...

If self-mutilating behavior would give Him pleasure or relief and this like is a part of His personality, would we approach Him that he has to stop doing it? YES, WE WOULD. Because it's not good for Him.
4. And now THE MOST IMPORTANT THING: I would not have written about my project, if Mr.Wood had not wanna quit smoking. But He DOES! He knows that smoking is bad for Him and He wants to quit it.
5. Who are we? We're His fans! Elijah really likes His fans...He gives us so much happines...shouldn't we do something for Him?
6. Ok, I must say it...in Polish language (I don't know, how is in English, I'm not an expert) pronouns starting with capital letters show the regard for person, who we write to. I'm Polish and I feel respect for Mr. Wood and You all, so that's the reason, why I write in this way. Of course I know, that Elijah is no God! xD Yeah, He is a human being just like the rest of us. EXACTLY.
Jesus Christ used to say that we should love our neighbours and help them. I'm a Christian and Elijah is my neighbour, so I'll help Him.

I don't think it is up to us to tell him to stop, if he wants help then sure, otherwise we may come off as being intrusive.
However, I am for the most part in.

Hey Perceival
I would love Elijah to stop smoking, but as Karin said it ultimately is HIS choice. Have you evidence to prove he wants to quit? I would love to see it written or in video, thanks.
How often does Elijah frequent this site meaning will this thread be of any use??

How can you possibly know that? We only know what we see of him in pics and read about him; we don’t know everyone he’s close to socially.
As fans, yes, we all want the best for Elijah but how can we presume to know what that is? Also, yes smoking is bad for you but I know two people that smoked most of their lives, gave it up in their 40’s and now, in their 70’s have never had a smoke-related illness.
It’s one thing if we were actively dialoging with him here about this or other issues. Otherwise, I don’t think the purpose of this site is to dictate to Elijah Wood how to behave.

thanks to an email i got yesterday, i'm going to chime in on this. i'm not sure if you wanted my blessing, but i'm afraid i won't be able to give it.
i see you're sincere in how you feel elijah should conduct his life, but it's a futile attempt to change his habit and that won't happen until elijah himself succeeds.
you are trying to rectify someone else's addiction and unless you are a certified medical or psychological professional, it won't happen sorry to say. he knows it's not a healthy thing he's doing, but i feel an addiction can only be stopped when something deeply personal clicks and brings that person to leave it flat out.
it's very caring of you to want to help, but you, me and the entire A&F board can't make elijah stop smoking. he will quit when he comes to the point that he wants to.
