If I just passed him in the street I wouldn't run after him, partly because I think that must be really annoying for him and partly because I'd probably spend half an hour debating with myself whether it was Elijah I just saw or not. But if I happened to sit down at the same table in a cafe or something (dream on, Este! ) I'd say something like, "Elijah? How are you? Pleased to meet you; I think you're great."

It really depends...the first time I met him it was during a con, so business and completely ok to be a silly fan...? the next time was boarding a plane to NZ.
Now take into account...Elijah can choose to board a plane through the VIP lounge but he chose to board with the common folk...and I chose to wait for him and speak with him. I know there were some Rings fans there that were disgusted because I did not leave him alone...but I mean, I was in line with him ..he's a human I'm a human..I generally speak to everyone near me in a line..so i didn't treat him much different than anyone else.
1 the approach...He was very open and animated and I think he wanted to talk to fans...he was very happy that day..sigh.
2 if he had acted like he didn't want to be bothered I(we) would have backed off.
So I think it depends...
For example if I saw him on the street in NYC I would absolutely begin the approach. But I would look for signs that he was busy, on a mission, quest, thing or just plain not wanting to be bothered....if I saw anything that made me feel like I was bothering him I would apologize and back off...
however if he seemed agreeable I most certainly would talk to him, I don't need another autograph but if I had my camera I'd certainly ask for another photo with him
NY phenomenon...Do you think that famous people like NY because people seldom make eye contact, therefore they can move about undisturbed easier?

i'm glad you brought that up lithe. it all boils down to judgment. elijah was at a party with seems like millions of people and parties are social functions, so i was going to approach him, ya know?
a few days prior to that party, i saw danny glover at the amtrak station in DC. i thought this was another great opportunity to get an autograph and maybe a photo. but once i was near him, i could see poor danny looked pretty tired. so i just approached him, told him i was glad to meet him, shook his hand, and walked away.

| Wow, that's hard dee! you know it's like you see someone you really want to see for the first time, a big opportunity and they you control yourself from taking an autograph? I can't control myself even if I see Elijah fainting of tiredness

It was lovely to read about your experiences Overlithe - I agree that if he seemed happy and willing to chat then it'd be alright to talk to him. But if he looked tired and weary, then maybe not.
Without knowing much about New York, I'd reckon celebrities like it there because the people are so used to seeing other celebrities - I know if someone famous came here they'd not get a moment;s peace, because nobody else does so it;d be a big deal.

I'm in complete agreement with Overlithe. If it were a meet-and-greet type thing, I'd ask for an autograph and pic. If I just met him on the street, first of all, I'd wonder what the heck he was doing in Alabama. Then, if he didn't seem busy, I'd walk up and say hi, most likely leaning in close so no one else could hear me, and ask if he really was Elijah. Then, if he seemed to want to be left alone, I'd apologize and leave. Otherwise, I'd just have a casual chat, like I do with any friendly stranger.
I'd certainly do my best not to go all fangirl on him; if he was in my town, and it wasn't for a meet-and-greet, he'd most likely be just hanging out and wouldn't want a scene.

I also wanted to say...as a cautionary tale...I've also been in the position where judgment failed me and I did become the annoying fan. It was that same type thing..the next morning in NZ in the airport baggage claim he and Billy chose to collect their own baggage and they were approached by several people including me...at first they were receptive....so I don't feel too bad about the initial interaction but the atmosphere suddenly changed and I didn't listen to my gut right away and as a result I suddenly felt as if I was intruding.
The point is..pay attention closely because the remorse I feel to this day about being an annoyance to them is a feeling you never want to have nor one you ever quite forget.

This is amaizing to me that people have met him. It's not just that you guys have met him that impresses me, its that you were so cool about it.
I read this discussion topic and gave it alot of thought, and in all honesty, even though I believe the "right" thing to do is to let a celebrity be, if it came to him I would be too astonished.
I would probably not go directly up..at first. Frist I would drop whatever I was carrying stand there with my mouth open, staring.
I could see myself not thinking and planting both feet firmly, one pointed finger extended at him like a Kansas farmer who just saw a UFO land in his back yard and saying something brilliant like.
"Dude!"
And overlithe, your story. I really felt what you were saying about the atmosphere changing and so forth. I can imagine that was not fun.

It depends on the situation. I would treat him just like I would treat anyone else, so if he's walking down the street or something I would let him walk by, if it was at a pub or something I may or may not talk to him, but I'd be more likely to because socialising is kinda the point in going out to pubs.

overlithe you are so lucky seeing Elijah at the airport, if I had seen him there I prob wouldn't have said anything to him being he would be busy and all.
If I saw him casually I would just sort of nod and smile to let him know I knew whp he was and chat to him if he approached me

I'd ask him to come to the general store for nothing specific then wash our bones in the Atlantic shore. if that made any sense to him a conversation would ensue guaranteed. Then we'd just go from there!!

Just curious. If you got the chance to sit down and talk to Elijah Wood. What would you want to talk about?

I think I'd want to ask him a lot of deep stuff that he probably wouldn't want to answer....like what is he scared of, which I've wondered for a long time, and what would he like to be doing with his life, and what he does do with his life in between filming. What kind of person he is. But I know that would be really nosy, lol!
