WOOD ATTACKED BY SOCCER CLUB
ELIJAH WOOD has been blasted by British soccer club West Ham United because they believe he tricked them into allowing violent scenes for new movie GREEN STREET to be shot in their stadium.
Bosses at the English Premiership team's Upton Park, London, stadium are furious with the 24-year-old because they had been assured the scenes would show soccer fans in a positive light.
A West Ham United club official says, "We would never have permitted them to work inside the ground if we had known how the film was going to turn out."

I don´t think that is true. I am from Spain, here football is the most important sport and the league is followed every weekend by almost the whole country. We also have violent groups of supporters and sometimes there are serious problems with them during the match or after it. The clubs have expressed their position against this attitude and behavior many times but it is very well known these groups receive money from teams for attending the matches taking place far away from their own city. This means that the teams are supporting these violent groups of hooligans because somehow it is good for them ( ).
So I am sure people from West Ham football club knew the real content of the movie, what it was about, but now they want to play a kind of masquerade to the public opinion.
Do you understand what I mean? For me there is no doubt about it. I love football and know how this business works.

Football is very important in France too, but we haven't got a lot of Hooligans like in England and Spain, except for Paris team (PSG) and Marseilles team (OM). There is a "war" between the suppoters. They're not intelligent for me.
And about West Ham, I'm totally agree with Enara.
I hate football because of the mentality from supporters, and all the money that the football player earn.
I prefer Quidditch!

Either way, it's certainly not Elijah who "tricked" anyone, because he only played Matt.

I was shocked when I read the title!! I don't think Lij tricked nobody, either. Why West Ham team is furious with Lij? Because the movie depicts the hooliganism violence. Unfortunately, there is a lack of security in many of the stadiums. I love sports, I love football, but these people are ruined it and because of them nobody can enjoy a match in the stadiums. I hope Germany take measures against hooliganism in next year's World Cup. I don't want to hear another sad incident like France '98 tournament. Remember the police officer attacked by those hooligans?

There is nothing to wonder about. They choose his name, because he is the famous person in this movie.
I do understand that they feel uncomfortable - but I really doubt that one of their officials have seen the movie, then they would know, that this film is about friendship and loyality - they could also have chosen Arsenal, Liverpool, Madrid, Barcelona or Schalke.
The bar scenes and the scenes in the stadium are so familiar to me, I am living with football for over 30 years, but I would never think, that all West Ham fans are Hooligans.
MyFrodo, you can be sure that our officials will do everything to protect the "normal" visitors, but you cannot control everything and every person - thats impossible.
Enara, I think it was Lexi, who has confirmed, that they lied about the real plot to the West Ham people....

I think every country that has a football culture has his own hooligans. In Belgium, we have the O-side of Anderlecht and the X-side of Antwerp (those are the two with the worst reputation). I'm already holding my breath now Anderlecht has be play against Liverpool and Chelsea for the Champion's League.
Twenty years ago, 39 people died during the finals of the UEFA-cup that was played in Belgium's Heizel Stadium between Liverpool and Juventus. I think that will forever be remembered as a black day in football history.
If West-Ham is not happy with the movie, they should go to Lexi and the producers of the film and not blame Elijah for something that he is not responsible for. He's only an actor...

I think we should also be careful about believing everything that's written on contactmusic. We all know how they sometimes like to take bits of texts from interviews etc. and make them sound like something else.

*beep beep* Publicity hogs coming through!
Seriously, Carina is right -- contactmusic is notorious for, ahem, not caring about facts. And even if the story is true, then they should get lives and blame someone other than the lead actor. The actors don't deal with that sort of thing. (But it does get the press paying attention -- if they said "West Ham is mad at Lexi Alexander," who would care?)

Exactly! Carina is right. I think Deenan posted a short newspaper article concerning this earlier, and Seven made a thread as well. It was the production team and not Lij who was responsible... so very tricksy.

Then again, in showbusiness there's no such thing as bad publicity. This could help the continuing process of spreading recognition of Lij as an actor who has more under his belt than Frodo alone.
This issue makes me feel all giggly inside. The article is absurd to begin with, and it conjures up images of a sneaky Lij as a sneaky little devil.

Well.... when I was at Tribeca Film fetival, Lexi Alexander actually was asked that same question , if she "tricked " the West Ham people. .. And she said she sort of did... and so they are not exactly off on feeling that way.... but , it's not Elijah's fault... he wasn't the director .... he was merely an actor doing what the director said too... so he had no power over what she was doing.. it was her idea and excuse the expression "ballgame".
