Quote:| And I may be alone in this, but I kind of liked the "dying but not really" bit. | nope, not alone. i feel ya...i loved that part. i was bawling when Harry was walking through the woods to face his death, then when he met Dumbledore and he said Harry might not be dead, i totally got my second wind and fell completely in love with JKR, lol. it had the emotional touch this book needed, but yet it didn't sacrifice it's biggest seller: Harry himself.
Quote:| Dobby's death shocked me, as did Hedwig's, actually. But they were both important - Hedwig's death ended Harry's childhood, and Dobby's death really solidified that fact that Harry is on his own and not a kid anymore. The burial scene was very touching. | oh, very nicely put.
Quote:| I loved the whole plot at the end with the Elder Wand - how it wouldn't fight Harry because he was using Draco's wand... that part was really cool. I almost felt, however, that the whole Deathly Hallows plot was just kind of pointless, up until that moment at the end. But after the ending, I like it more. | again, completely agreed. the only part i did like, until like you said the ending where everything tied together, was the scene at Luna's house with what's-his-face...Luna's father. that was intriguing...it introduced all these new possibilities, plus it added conflict in that not all allies were 100% loyal to Harry.
i was very disappointed that Sirius barely even got a mention in this book. yes, they went back to Grimmauld place, but it wasn't all that reminiscent of OotP, so i wasn't even reminded of Sirius. he did appear at the end out of the stone with Lily & James and Lupin, but even there he was just another body that appeared...Harry never really even talked to him, just his parents and apologized to Lupin. i loved Sirius above all other (excluding Harry, and most recently Lupin, who is now tied in second place with my love for Sirius)...i would've like to see him acknowledged a bit more, is all.

SPOILERS!
Yay! I'm really glad I'm not alone in liking the parts that I like! Haha.
I also totally loved the part where Harry used the stone to bring his loved ones back when he was getting ready to face Voldemort. It was written sooo beautifully and so very tragic and wonderful at the same time. I cried. I think JK really outdid herself with that bit. I was also so proud of Harry and how he accepted his fate and was willing to give up his life to save everyone else. He is such a good little hero! Lol.
I also liked little bits here and there. Like when Harry and Hermione are in the Godric's Hollow graveyard on Christmas Eve, disguised as Muggles. I loved Hermione taking Harry's hand as he cried at his parents' grave - it was so sad, but I loved it.
I loved Ron fighting the locket.
I liked Aberforth and the DA's secret hideout.
I loved McGonagall and her army of desks, and I was SO glad when Mrs. Weasley fought Bellatrix. That was an awesome part.
I liked the whoel Kreacher plot, and hearing his story. It really makes you feel bad for him, and I'm really glad he came around in the end.
And of course, who can forget Dudley admitting that he doesn't trhink Harry is a waste of space? Haha.
Ahhh, there's too much to talk about! Too many things I loved!

Agreed about the Kreacher plot, I felt so sorry for him after hearing his story. I always feel sorry for house-elfs because of their innate blind loyalty and I'm glad he came round and Hermione's SPEW finally paid off!!
And Dudley, priceless! I read somewhere that his dementor made him see himself for who he truly was, and that made him feel awful, so he tried to change his personality a bit.

I want your opinion on something... One of my colleagues asked me yesterday if she could let her 8-year old son read "Deathly Hallows". When I said "no", she seemed shocked, saying that it is a children's book. I then explained why I thought it was not suited for children that young.
What's your opinion? As of what age would you recommend it?

I would recommend for teenaagers, but I guess it depends on how emotionally-mature this 8 year old is. Deaths are a hard thing to handle, but if your colleagues son has read the rest of the series, I'd say let him go ahead. I'm 16 and a bit, but my sister who is 11 read it, so...I don't know.

I'm of the opinion that these books ceased to be strictly children's books a long time ago. However, kids these days are exposed to so much, I think Harry Potter would be the least of a parent's worries. It's good literature, and, hey let's face -- kids wanting to read is never a bad thing!
There are definitely mature themes in Deathly Hallows (I believe it's written for the late teen crowd, as JK said at one point that she wrote each book for the age group Harry fell into in that particular book), but I don't think it would be terrible for a 8-year-old to read.

I'm not looking at the American cover right now (I finally put the book on the shelf downstairs with the other HP books and I'm too tired and lazy to go down and get it ), but I looked at it when I finished the book and I'm pretty sure it's Harry in the Great Hall at Hogwarts at the very end with Voldemort falling over as you turn it around to the back. It's actually pretty spoiler-ish if you could figure out what it shows before you read. I could be wrong but that's my memory from July.

I think Celebrian's right. My friends and I were talking about this right after we read the book and I think we decided that they were reaching for the Elder wand.
|
Sort of is such a harmless thing to say, it's just a filler, it doesn't really mean anything. But after certain things sort of means everything - like after "I love you" or "You're going to live."

This is the cover of the Dutch version, to be released in November. I like it, it's better than some of the others.

PS: click on the thumbnail for bigger version.
