Ah, I was just coming in here to see if someone had made this thread yet! Good job.
I can't wait to get my hands on a copy of this, and find time to read it!
For those of you not familiar, "Children of Hurin" is set in an earlier age of Middle-Earth (the first age, actually). The tale centers around Turin and his sister Nienor, who are the cursed children of Hurin.
Short versions of this story have been published in some of Tolkien's other works, but this is finally a long, complete version, and I'm so excited to read it!
It's really a great thing to have happen for the Tolkien community!

i'm really excited about it too. just last year, i finished all (well, most) of Tolkien's other works, so i'm all caught up and ready for more. such perfect timing...i'm so excited to buy a copy soon!
thanks for the details. i think i remember reading something about the plot, but i couldn't remember specifically what it was about.
and i'm actually quite shocked more people haven't responded to this thread. i know there are a ton of members out there who were in love with the books before the movies and i thought would be pretty excited about something like this. hmm.

From ComingSoon.net:
Quote:Reuters reports that a "new" book by J.R.R. Tolkien goes on sale on Tuesday. Tolkien's son and literary executor Christopher, now in his eighties, constructed "The Children of Hurin" from his father's manuscripts, and said he tried to do so "without any editorial invention".
Already told in fragmentary form in "The Silmarillion", which appeared in 1977, the new book is darker than "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings", for which Tolkien is best known.
The story is set long before "The Lord of the Rings" in a part of Middle-earth that was drowned before Hobbits ever appeared, and tells the tragic tale of Turin and his sister Nienor who are cursed by Morgoth, the first Dark Lord.
Hollywood studios are eager to buy the film rights of the new book, according to David Brawn, director at Tolkien publisher HarperCollins.
"We all want this first and foremost to enjoy life as a book," said Brawn. "No one's saying never to a film (but) the film rights are reserved by the estate. We want to see what reaction it gets and then let it run its course." |

I’ve only read the Hobbit and LOTR by Tolkien…I haven’t read anything else although I know others have. I’m usually skeptical about writers completing the unfinished works of others. That’s not to say this couldn’t be quite good, it’s just that I don’t automatically follows things like this.
I still might get to some of Tolkien's other works though.

Geezzzzzz....the Entertainment Review of the new book is brutal! However, I will still read it. I love Tolkien...and am really curious to see if his son matched his vision and feeling while completely the unfinished book.

Hey
I have considered buying other Tolkien books but have decided not too, I have the hobbit and lord of the rings that is enough for me I think.
I probably wouldn't enjoy the other books as much..

I want to read The Silmarillion (sp?) and am curious about The Children of the Hurion, but often when a book is not finished by the original author...it isn't as good. Somehow or other, the author breathes his or her own spirit into the telling of the tale...and the reader can sense the difference.
At least that is how I found the novels started by Agatha Christie and finished by someone else. No one could write mysteries like her.
