I read 1984 at a different time than most of you........ (over 20 years ago)
Like then as now. It is disturbing but makes people realize "what if........' and now more than ever .... it CAN really happen...

Frodo: reading your comment makes me wonder how I would have felt reading this intense book at that time.. probably just as worried.

as for me, I ve read this books couple of weeks ago - interesting but very depressive I must say. When reading it I saw a perverted model of the Soviet Union...especially the Stalin's times. And reading about tortures - was really hard

Whoa, maybe it's just me, but I saw The Giver as a complete dystopia. The characters had no free will in their lives. It's very akin to 1984, I though.

I catch myself reading this book from time to time just for the sheer thrill - it's incredibly well-written, and also frighteningly well-thought out. Simply pulls you in, you know? Way too many utopia/dystopia books get too hooked on their message and plain forget that they're telling a story and developing characters (which is why Lord of the Flies needs to curl up and die, in my opinion) but George Orwell managed it fantastically in this book. I also read Brave New World recently (found it on my sis's bookshelf) and I think the two cannot really be compared save for the subject matter - Brave New World has a frighteningly good, intense premise (almost made me vomit because it was so vivid) but later on it all falls apart when it comes to developing a character for Bernard. Was it Bernard? Something with B...
Just my two cents.

I now own 1984. I am glad. I will read it again, but after I've finished with Crime and Punishment, and Trainspotting.
