I searched and didn't find a thread for this. If there is one, I apologize and feel free to merge this in.
I finished this a few days ago. I was impressed at the complex world that he created. There was so much in terms of politics, religion, cultural differences, racism and the nature of evil to think about. I think this would be a great book for a book discussion group. I also think I'd get a lot out of a second reading, but no time right now. 
A friend who had recommended this to me also said that the sequel, Son of a Witch, is also very good. So, it's on my mental list, but I have no idea when I'll get to it.
Anyway, has anyone read it? What did you think?

I can understand that Tsuno. I consider myself to have a pretty good vocabulary and I ran across some words that were unfamiliar too. It is also a fairly complex story and I'm sure that would be harder in a language that is not your primary one. Good luck with it. But, I would certainly understand if you decided against finishing it.

I dunno, I'm reading it for my book club and I really don't like it. I think it's great that he managaed to create a whole new world, but it's just not a great book. I don't think it has a plot, it just seems like a series of events strung together for no specific purpose.
I do enjoy the whole political issue, with the wizard and Elphies missions and such, but that's about it. And the issue with Animals is interesting. It just seems like the author and all these great ideas and beliefs but didn't manage to convey them in a way thats...readable? I can't really describe my issues with this book.
I am 100% in love with Crope and Tibbet, though. I still can't believe what he did to them. The Philosophy Club was...ewwww. Could someone possibly explain its purpose for me? Because I still don't get it.

Well, there is kind of an episodic nature of it since the different sections are in different locations and have some gaps of years between them, so I can understand how you feel that way. But, I don't think they are just strung together. I think the political issues, as well as the cultural and religious stuff and the education and development of Elphaba and Glinda (and others) is part of a single story that develops over time. And, it is all tied together, in my opinion, in creating a complex world where people have differing beliefs and differing views on the same events.
I found it readable, but I can see how others would find it more difficult.
And, yup, ewwww. I'm not sure I can really explain that bit well either. I think it would take at least one or two more readings to figure out the symbolism there. (When you mentioned loveing Crope and Tibbett, for some reason Merry and Pippin popped into my head.  )

I read it a few times and enjoyed it. I still need to read Son of a Witch. I really want to see the Broadway musical though. Idina Menzel is amazing.

Yes, it's the inspiration. It follows the plot but is different in ways. The ending is much happier for one major reason. *cough* Fiyero*cough* I really prefer the ending to the musical then the ending to the book. It really ties the ending and the charecters to the movie more than the book did.
I saw the musical in New York, and it was AMAZING! I loved it. And then after I left I met Norbert Leo Butz, the original Fiyero, on the street and got a picture.

I have read both Wicked and Son of a Witch and both are awesome!! I totally advise anyone who liked Wicked to read Son of a Witch... and yes I love the musical of Wicked, too, though it is a bit different from the book.

I read both Wicked and Confessions of the Ugly Stepsisters and then tried to read LOST and Wicked was and is my first choice. My daughter loved Confesssions and my husband is just finishing up Son of a Witch and he said it is excellent. So I'll probably read SofaW next.

I haven't seen the show, but I'd like to. I requested Son of a Witch from the library and it is "In Transit" but hasn't arrived yet for me. Hopefully I'll have it in the next few days.
Joanie - Wicked is a fairly difficult book. There's a lot of complexity and some stuff is pretty strange. I think it is also quite thought-provoking, so I'm not surprised that your daughter found it hard to follow. I've heard that SoaW is an easier read, but I'll see for myself soon.
Frodomyhero - Are Ugly Stepsisters and LOST by Gregory McGuire also? I don't know anything about those.

The book is quite good, but the show is too amazing for words. I saw it twice. Idina Menzel's portrayal of Elphaba (oh, and singing voice) make it jawdropping.

I'd like to see the show at some point, but I have no idea when that might happen. I have Son of a Witch and I'm about 100 pages in. I need to find some more time to read. . .
Edit: I finished it this evening. It was somewhat easier reading than Wicked as I had been told. I liked it. And, I have to say the ending sounded to me like a setup for book 3. I suppose we'll see.
