Heaps of it has been ripped off. But then most fantasy has been ripped off from something else. The whole idea of the one little guy who has to save all of 'humanity' by defeating the evil guy who noone else can kill. And in the first book with the philsophers stone, which can return all his power, like the ring etc etc. And the dementors/nazgul etc etc. and the whole shelob/aragog giant spidery thing. the list goes on... Not that I don't like Harry! I loooooove HP. I'm an obsessed fan. But I can see how it's been ripped off.

anyone seen 'secret window'??? there are more than one great story line in the world, and you can mix them...was it revenge, love...i can't remember, Morton Raigney was explaining them to his wife.
this is anna: 'black rider, mountains of mist'??? that's being a copycat???

I saw Secret Window...sadly, I don't remember that part, lol.
I definitely don't think HP is a rip-off of LOTR. Frankly, I like HP better.
I would try not to read biographies...but The Diary of Anne Frank was awesome. Whee.

it's a really short part in secret window...i've seen it too many times i guess..
maybe hp is better because it's not over yet.
bios???...i've read anna frank too, and it was very sad...i'd rather read something happier from time to time..when it's a true story, it makes me sad. read to escape reality, i do not really like bios and political stuff

| Exactly, its the general idea, maybe harry potter isent like a hobbit with harry feet and currly hair, but its the same idea...little guy goes to save the world. harry potter isent the only thing that has the same idea as tolkiens books, theres alot more.

legolasbuzzgirl: the end of the movie is not the same as the one in the book...it's even better!!!!! *tries very hard not to tell the end*
galadriel and hermajesty: i guess i'm not reading HP because i do not have time and i've got requirements to read these days (and they suck ) but maybe i'll read the HP books when i'm very old

John Grisham I won't read because they all sound so mass marketed and just too much the same. "The Jury" "The Firm" "The Client." Not my cup of tea. I have worked in a law firm and it's stuffy and boring and I sure don't want to read about it, lol. Besides I don't really like to read what everyone else is reading. There are exceptions like Harry Potter and Da Vinci Code, but generally I like to scout for lesser known novels.
Also I won't read anything from Oprah's book club because they're all insanely depressing. I like to enjoy what I read, not want to shoot myself, lol.

I'll never say never to a book, but I can tell you lot NEVER EVER EVEN CONSIDER reading Anita and me by Meera syal. I did it in english literature and it was the most boring book ever. I have never put a book down when I've started it, i always try to read it to the end just in case it gets better but i just wanted to burn that book! just a word of warning to the world

There are a lot of books, stories, and novels with that general theme that were around waaaaay before Tolkien ever came about. There are also countless books after LOTR that have that same idea, but you wouldn't say those authors ripped LOTR off.
