That sounds like a lovely Christmas gift, Taf.
Quote:I'm a little scared though. The book I got is a Limited Edition... Leather bound... Gold leaf edges... Finely illustrated. And OMG... it's just such a BEAUTIFUL book! I'm scared of bending some of the pages. I'm even scared that it'll get spoiled by the dust when I put it on my shelf!!! lol Something tells me I'll be wearing protective gloves when I finally pluck up the courage to open it. lol |
LOL, I know what you mean. I have a few LotR / Hobbit editions that are like that and I keep them safely in the closet. People can look at them but there's no way I'd let anyone use them to read
Back to Narnia now... I'v read the first two books from a colleague who owned them and totally loved them. Unfortunately, she only has two and they don't have them in the library. I'm thinking of trying to buy them from ebay.

You are so lucky, they sound awesome.
I've been reading through the series for the first time, in anticipation of the movie. I think they're great. I'm reading through them more or less in the order that they were published (as opposed to Narnian chronological order) and I've read about four now. So cool. Especially 'The Magician's Nephew.'

I've read the series about ten million times. My favourite personally is 'The Horse and his boy', although it's generally forgotten as it's not really about the Pevensie children or Eustace and Jill.
But yes, you have to read them in proper order starting with The Magician's Nephew. ... man.. I love these books, hehe.

I'm a few chapters into The Magicians Nephew now, and I'm loving it!
I don't think I've ever read a book so carefully before in my life! lol

lol, I think if I did that my Mum would kill me! Infact she's already threatened me. The first thing she said when I opened it on Christmas day was "You had better read that!!" Made me smile... I can understand though. It was an expensive book.

I read LWW as a child and liked it, but hadn't reread it until recently when I had it out of the library for my son to read. Then, I also read the Magician's Nephew. We got the whole set for Christmas as a gift to the family from my in-laws. So, when I get a chance, I will read more of them. My son is in the middle of the sixth now. My husband read them repeatedly as a child and loved them and reread LWW when we had it out about a month ago.
So, I'd say that this family gives them thumbs up.

I've never read the book but I really want to! Does the movie do the book justice?

I think it does. The scenery is beautiful and the characters are just like I had imagined them.
I managed to buy the set on ebay and I can't wait to get them so I can start reading

Woohoow, I bought the books yesterday .
After I saw teh film, I knew I had to read them, so I've started today. I think Lewis' style of writing is really marvelous. He adresses directly to the reader so you have the feeling you are really there, in Narnia .

I just bought the book too, lol. I finished the book and now I'm on the second one. I can kinda see why he didn't do that one first but, whatever. I also really enjoy his writing, in a way it does remind me of Tolkiens.

Since you mentioned it reminded you of Tolkien, I have a comment I want to make and I hope it's not too spoiler-ish.
WARNING: This is spoiler-ish for The Magician's Nephew and The Silmarillion. So, skip it if you want to avoid spoilers.
When Aslan was singing to create the world of Narnia, I was very strongly reminded of the creation story at the beginning of the Silmarillion. In Tolkien's, there were many voices, rather than one, but still the different types of music to create different parts of the world had a lot of similarities. Of course, I read the Sil quite a while ago, so I don't remember details, but I thought it was a very interesting connection and possibly not surprising since they knew each other and participated in the same writing group.

Go and watch out in second hand books shops. I bought Prince Caspian and the last Battle for 45 pence each in a charity shop. Go and look in the children section.
