Yes and yes... and seriously, things don't have ratings for nothing, I would definately recommend NO ONE under 18 reads the book.... it is seriously f*cked up... especially considering its a true story.... and the movie is really scary... I mean even though its made in the 70's, it still gets unbelievable.... Linda Blair who plays the part of Regan (the girl who gets possessed) was admitted to a psychiatric hospital after she made the movie cos it messed with her that bad cos of all the stuff that happened on set... some stuff wasn't meant to happen at all and they have put a bit of it on the Directors Cut version.... if you do see that one... look for when the mother goes down with a candle to see whats happening, she will walk past a rangehood (exhaust fan over the stove), and a face will appear on the stainless steel... THAT WAS NOT SCRIPTED!! It is very scary...

It bloody is, I was 19 when I saw it for the first time, and even though we watched it in the day time.. I didn't sleep for a week, or if I did, I slept with the light on... I am dead serious... I have never done so many castings for psychic protection in my life!!!!
